A member of the college’s first senior class. Bishard is working in the Volunteer Services and Customer Relations Department at the hospital under the direction of Bea Vaughan. Bishard’s intern duties relate to her special interest in human resource management and public relations. She is directly involved in broaden- ing and enhancing the hospital volunteer and customer services programs. The young student works closely with hospital volunteers to match their interest to the various assign ments in the hospital. She also interviews patients in an effort to provide better service and facilities. Since assuming the intern role. Bishard has prepared several brochures featuring the volunteer services and customer relations for the hospital. She has also prepared a handbook for junior volunteers of the hospital. “I really enjoy my work with the hospital,” Angie says, “for it gives me a lot of experience working with people and learning about the ‘real world’ of work. “I think an internship should be required for all students receiving a degree for I know that it will provide a smooth U'ansition from the classroom to the workplace,” she stated. “An internship will also give the student a competitive edge over other graduates seeking employment positions.” She will earn three semester hours credit toward meeting graduation requirements for the internship. Bishard has maintained an excellent academic average while a student at Chowan and has been placed on the Dean’s List for several semesters. Pat Owens, Roanoke-Chowan Hospital’s director of admissions, and Mrs. Dorothy Wallace, chairperson of the Department of Business, worked together to develop this program in an effort to give students practical experiences in the “real world”. After graduation, Bishard plans to work in human resources management or public relations.
