David and Tammy Joyner, and their sister, Susan Joyner Harmon, three of the children of Mr. and Mrs. Julian T. Joyner of Ahoskie, are education majors at Chowan. They started their required student teaching assignments in late January with the Hertford County School System. “It is somewhat unusual for three members of one family to be members of the same class in college,” said Dr. Charles Bentley, chairman of Chowan’s Department of Education, “and it is, indeed, unusual for the three members to be preparing for the same careers.” Susan and her sister, Tammy, both majoring in elementary education, have been assigned to R. L. Vann School in Ahoskie. Susan is teaching the fourth grade while Tammy has been assigned to the fifth grade class. David, a mathematics education major, is teaching a high school math class at Hertford County High School in Ahoskie. “All three of the Joyners are excellent Alumnus assiunes Hertford pastorate s. Keith Vaughan, Class of 1983, has been named the new pastor of Hertford Baptist Church, and began his service in early February. He previously served as pastor of Cary church, Henderson. After graduating from Chowan, Vaughan attended Campbell University and received the master of divinity degree from Southeastern seminary. He and his wife, the former Edna Galloway, have two children: Danielle, 8; and Dustin, 5. students,” Bentley said. “They have excellent academic records and last semester Susan and Tammy were placed on the President’s List and David was on the Dean’s List.” Bentley said education majors at Chowan complete a 12-week student teaching assignment at various elementary and high schools in the area. “They are assigned to supervising teachers in their respective schools,” he said, “and gain valuable experience in all aspects of teaching.” The three members of the Joyner family are among nineteen seniors, majoring in education at Chowan, who have been assigned to schools to complete their student teaching assignments this semester in preparation to receive their bachelor degrees on May 14. All tijree completing student teaching requirement in Hertford County School System Photography grad wins three awards m annual contest Kenneth D. Lyons, Class of 1985 and a photography major, won three top awards in the annual contest conducted by the Virginia News Photographers Association for newspaper writing, photography, art, and page makeup and design. Lyons, a news photographer for The Daily Piess, Newport News, VA, won best in the show and best spot photograph of teen Jeff Junior Davis, II, lying in the street after being killed in a robbery. Lyons also won a first place award for a photographic picture story. The Chowan graduate also placed third in the feature picture category and received an honorable mention in the portrait personality division. CHOWAN TODAY, Spring 1994 - PAGE 13
