Collins gets Governor’s Award for Excellence in Women’s Sports Janet Collins, head volleyball coach at Chowan College, was presented the Governor’s Award for Excellence in Women’s Athletics during the annual Girls and Women in Sports Day in Raleigh earlier this month. Collins, an assistant professor of physial education, was among more than 250 girls and women from all over North Carolina who gathered at Meredith College to celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports Day. The event was presented jointly by the North Carolina Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness and Health and the North Carolina Health and Fitness ^ Foundation. “We are very proud of all of our award recipients and nominees,” said Shellie Pfohl, coordinator for North Carolina Girls and Women in Sports Day. “By recognizing the outstanding girls and women in sports in our state we celebrate the achievements of girls and women everywhere.” James Garrison, Chowan’s vice president for athletics, said “we are proud of Janet Collins and we are delighted that she has been recognized with the excellence award.” “She is an outstanding coach and teacher,” he continued, “and this well- deserved award recognizes her invaluable contributions to women’s athletics on the local, state and national levels.” Collins, who joined Chowan’s faculty in 1964, was inducted into the Sports Hall of Fame in 1991. In recognition of her volleyball coaching, she was twice named Coach of the Year of Region X of the National Junior College Athletic Association and received the same honor for three years in NJCAA District 9. In her 30 years of coaching at Chowan, Collins’ girls volleyball teams have won two conference championships, three regional titles, and three district champi onship trophies. Collins’ teams have been ranked nationally on three occasions and several members of her teams have been named All-Americans. One of the players coached by Collins, Jody Lindstrom of Stewartstown, PA, was named NJCAA’s Notes of Interest ^ Collins another on the Helms Center office. No. 1 Defensive Player in the Nation in 1992. A Virginia native, Collins received her under graduate degree from the University of Richmond and com pleted graduate study at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. She was awarded her master’s degree in education by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Girls and Women in Sports Day is a special day set aside each Febru ary to focus attention on issues involving girls and women in sports. The tradition was started in 1987 by the Women’s Sports Foundation to remember Olympic volleyball player Flo Hyman, who died of Marfan’s syndrome. Hyman worked diligently to break down the barriers for all girls and women in sports. Alumna^s new business specializes in gourmet peanuts Patsy Marks, an alumna in the Class of 1974, grew up on a farm devoted to raising peanuts and, after several other successful ventures, has launched a new business involving “the bestest and most special peanuts”, as her advertising brochure proclaims. Marks, an active community worker and mother of three children, started “Belmont Peanuts” at her historic home near Capron, VA, to package and distribute gourmet peanuts. Most of her business is by mail order, but “they are available at a number of retail stores and we welcome corporate accounts,” she said. The business name was taken from that of the Marks’ home, which was built in the late 18th century and is listed in both the state and national historical records. “Belmont” was one of the plantations involved in Nat Turner’s insurrection. “Belmont” is located on Buckhorn Quarter Sage named athletic trainer Stacy B. Sage, a native of Ontario, Califor nia, has accepted the position as athletic trainer at the beginning of the current semester. Sage received her undergraduate degree in physical education from California State University. She was awarded the master’s degree in sports science from Eastern New Mexico University in Portales where she was also named the most outstanding graduate student in 1993. Sage’s experience includes service as a certified athletic trainer with La Puente High School and Mt. San Antonio College. A member of the National Athletic Trainers Association, Sage holds certification in first aid and CPR as well as being a certified water safety instructor and lifeguard. Road in the heart of Southampton County, which is said to be one of the nation’s largest producers of Virginia peanuts. “The farm land around here is ideal for growing peanuts,” Mrs. Marks stated. Married to Robert F. Marks, III, Patsy is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Edwards of Pendleton. Her husband, father, brother and several other relatives, are engaged in peanut farming operations. “I have been around peanuts and peanut farming all my life,” the attfactive entrepreneur said, “and I learned very early in life what it takes to produce top quality peanuts.” After graduation from high school, Patsy entered Chowan College to major in printing technology. After receiving her associate’s degree, she continued her education at Georgia Southern University and was awarded the bachelor’s degree in industtial technology with an emphais in printing technology. Following several positions in the industry, Marks returned to her alma mater as a printing technology instructor for several years until her marriage to the grandson of the person for whom Chowan’s classroom building is named. “I really enjoyed my association with the printing industry,” Marks stated, “but ‘Belmont Peanuts’ is a business that allows me to be involved in community and church activities and also to be at home with my small children.” Robert, the young son of Mr. and Mrs. Marks, is featured on the colorful brochure advertising Belmont Peanuts that “have that great fresh taste of the country.” Incidentally, the brochure was an award winner in a recent contest of PIVA, the Printing Industries of the Virginias. Marks says her business is growing. Through the availability of toll-free telephone and FAX service in her home, she is able to process orders very quickly. She also plans to advertise in national publications, and “this should help sales quite a bit,” she stated.
