Campus, Alumni Htutpenings Stan Mitchell 1944 - 1994 Professor of Art Was talented musician; active in business affairs Stanley Mitchell, art professor, dies after brief illness Stanley Algram Mitchell, an associate professor of art, died on April 29,1994, at the age of 50 and after several months of illness. Mr. Mitchell, who was born in Raleigh, was a teaching artist and was widely recognized for his work in commercial art. An associate professor of art, Mitchell joined the faculty of Chowan College in the fall of 1977. He was awarded the undergraduate and master’s degrees from East Carolina University and he completed additional graduate study at Virginia Commonwealth University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Mitchell also studied at Parson’s School of Design. A veteran of military service during the Korean conflict, Mitchell was a member of Murfreesboro Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, Kay Perkins Mitchell; two daughters, Jennifer Perkins Mitchell and Christina Kelly Mitchell; and a son, Allan McNeill Mitchell, all of Murfreesboro. Mr. Mitchell was also survived by five sisters and a brother: Lois M. Bailey and Clara M. Whitman, both of Garner; Virginia M. Crouthamel of Hatboro, Pa., Rena M. Miner of Stu'f City, Eunice M. Baker of Oxford, and Gerald Kenneth Mitchell of Raleigh. Funeral services were conducted at Murfreesboro Baptist Church by Dr. Davis Smith, Rev. George Whitman, Rev. James Brown and Dr. B. Franklin Lowe. Burial was in Murfreesboro’s Riverside Cemetery. The family requested that memorial dona tions be made to Chowan College or to Roanoke Chowan Hospice, Box 272, Ahoskie, NC 27910. Alumna of’27, among oldest in Winton, dies Lizzie Jones Downs, a member of the Class of 1927, died May 16,1994. She was born December 8,1905, and was one of the oldest residents of Winton. Funeral services were held May 19. Mrs. Downs often told of her student days at Chowan, and said she was disciplined for playing “ragtime” type music. This musical talent enabled her to obtain the job of playing the piano to accompany silent films at the local theater. After graduating from Chowan, she taught school in South Mills. “Miss Lizzie” as she was affectionately known, thought Winton was the “center of the universe” and convinced her husband to buy the home in Winton where she was raised. She resided there until her death. “Miss Lizzie” and her late husband, Philip G. Downs, were pioneers in the area of promoting the planting of cover corps and the conversion to gas heating for tobacco curing, cooking and home heating in the Roanoke-Chowan area. Alumnus school principal Gregory Todd, Class of 1966, is currently serving as principal of Northampton County High School-East. Todd holds the associate degree from Chowan and was awarded a bachelor’s degree and a master’s in educational administration by East Carolina University. He also attended Virginia Polytechnical Institute in Blacksburg, Todd is a native of Bertie County and is married to the former Libby Vick. The Todds reside in Conway. The Davis Presentation of Colors was erected in early May in front of historic McDowell Columns to display the United States, North Carolina and Christian flags. The new display was given by the Davis family of Conway in memory of Grady P. Davis and in tribute to Mrs. Marguerite L. Davis, his widow. Mr. Davis served as a Chowan trustee from 1978 to 1987.
