Attended Chowan to study ‘fainting, music, elocution and voice” and ‘Ho play tennis and basketball” On the Campus Oldest living alnmna attends 1994 ceremonies Chowan’s oldest living alumna, Mrs. O. C. Turner, of Gatesville, attended the 1994 Graduation Exercises May 14 and also was a special guest at the “Alumni Reunion Celebration” following the commencement program in the President’s Dining Room of Thomas Cafeteria. Mrs. Turner, who will be 103 on July 22, is the former Mary Wiggins, and graduated in the Class of 1912. All living alumni firom the classes of 1912 through 1943, and their spouses were special guests when Chowan closed its 146th year of service, and were invited to a luncheon to celebrate Chowan’s return to senior college status. Mrs. Turner attended the college when it was known as Chowan Baptist Female Institute to study “painting, music, elocution, voice and to play tennis and basketball.” Married to one of Gates County’s most successful businessmen and farmers, Mrs. T\imer enjoyed a teaching career before becoming postmis tress of the Gatesville Post Office. Following the death of her husband she Kevin Clary presents Mrs. Turner a dozen red roses. Mrs. Turner was instrumental in reopening Chowan College after it was closed for several years during World War II. She has also served as a trustee of the institution. Upon her graduation from Chowan in 1912 Mrs. Turner received a dozen roses from a “favorite beau” since it was a tradition in those years for each graduate to be presented roses by her father or her beau. “They don’t do that any more,” she said once to a newspaper reporter. But the tradition was resumed temporarily at the 1994 graduation exercises ... because Mrs. Turner was presented a bouquet of red roses when she and other special guests were introduced at the beginning of the program. Taylor inducted into Phi Kappa Phi Patsy W. Taylor, instructor of merchandise management, has been inducted into the East Carolina University chapter of Phi Kappa Phi. The primary objective of Phi Kappa Phi is to recognize and encourage superior scholarship in all academic disciplines. Membership in the organization is by invitation only and candidates must be nominated and approved by a local chapter in accordance with the bylaws of both the chapter and the national society. Superior scholar ship and good character are the major criteria used in the selection of members. Mrs. Taylor is currently pursuing a Certificate of Advanced Studies degree in marketing education.
