^ Development ^ Reports heard at annual meeting Successful inaugural year cited for Fine Arts Foundation Ron Lane, left, congratulates Kenneth Christison upon his installa tion as the 1994-95 president of the Chowan Fine Arts Foundation. I Dr. and Mrs. Robert Kahn congratulate Lane on a successful year at the helm of the fine arts foundation. Mrs. Kahn was elected to a three-year term on the hoard of directors at the annual meeting. Reports of successful projects to “foster greater understanding and appreciation for the fine arts as a source of strength for the region” highHghted the annual meeting of the Chowan Fine Arts Foundation in early May. Ron Lane, president, presided over the annual session and reviewed the progress of the foundation during the first full year of service. “We were very pleased to make financial grants for three projects during the year,” Lane said, “and these will certainly help to improve the cultural offerings of the college.” Lane, a Chowan alumnus and currently an art instructor with Hertford County High School, noted that funds were provided to the Division of Art to frame 24 watercolor paintings which will become a travelling art show to schools, communities and churches and the Division of Music received funds to underwrite a concert series. The foundation also provided funds to purchase materials to build stage sets for a drama presentation. The Chowan Players is being revived by Dr. Joyce Elliott, Dr. Brenda Gordon and Dr. Rick Gay. E. Vincent Tilson, vice president for development, reported that the Foundation has 59 members and financial receipts during the past year exceeded expectations. R. Clayton Lewis, director of corporate and foundation relations, reported on two trips sponsored by the foundation to see Les Miserable! in Raleigh and the popular West Side Story in Norfolk. Lewis noted that large groups attended both events. Lewis also pointed out the success of the cultural events calendar produced by the foundation during the fall term. The calendar listed cultural events in the Roanoke-Chowan region and was widely distributed in the area. Kenneth Christison, who has been active in the founda tion since it was formed, was installed as president for the 1994-95 year. Other officers will be named at the fall meeting of the foundation. Elected to three year terms on the board of directors were: Peggy Brinkley, Aulander; Brenda Hewitt, Woodland; Mrs. Irena Kahn, Ahoskie; Marcia Sherrod, Tarboro; and, Karen Knowles, Windsor. Currently serving a directors with two year terms are: Mary Lee Taylor, Corapeake; Barbara Harrell, Jackson; Polly Forbes and Libby Tilson, both of Murfreesboro; and, Jean Sharp, Ahoskie. Completing one year terms are Jane Stephenson, Boykins, VA; Motse Brooks, Tarboro; Tom Caulkins, Murfreesboro; Laura Harrell, Windsor; and, Lottie Lassiter, Ahoskie. Dr. James W. Batten, center, congratulates Dr. William B. Martin, new president of the Friends of Whitaker Library. Mrs. Geraldine Harris, head librarian, left, gave a report at the annual meeting held in the President’s Dining Room E. Frank Stephenson was the featured speaker at the annual meeting of the Friends of Whitaker Library and reviewed his new book on Richard Gatling, a native of Hertford County.
