Series”
to benefit
surrounding
communities
as well as
the college
Taylors establish
lecture series
Dr. and Mrs. R. Hargus Taylor have estab
lished the “Heritage Lectures” fund to provide
financial assistance in sponsoring lectures and
programs on the campus.
“The lectureship will benefit the citizens of
Murfreesboro and surrounding area as well as
the Chowan community,” said E. Vincent
Tilson, vice president for development. “The
lectures and programs made possible through
the generosity of Hargus and Doris Taylor will,
indeed, be cultural assets to this area.”
Only the earnings of the fund will be applied
toward a series of lectures and programs
selected and sponsored by the college’s Depart
ment of Religion and Philosophy.
“The focus of the ‘Heritage Lectures’ will be
on religious personalities and movements as
contributors to an understanding of the Judaeo-
Christian heritage,” said R. Clayton Lewis,
director of corporate and foundation relations.
“Frequent emphasis is to be given to the
contributions of Baptists,” he continued.
Dr. Taylor has served a number of area
Baptist churches as a supply pastor. He has also
authored histories of several churches including
Murfreesboro Baptist where he has served as a
deacon and in various other capacities.
Dr. Taylor joined the Chowan staff in January
1963 and is now chairman of the Department of
Religion and Philosophy. Mrs. Taylor is the
acquisitions assistant in Whitaker Library.

Dr. Carl Garrott, professor of language and literature, has authored an
article entitled “La detente finale at 1’assimilation de sonorite des groupes
rythmiques” which was published in November foy the Center for
Applied Linguistics.
The Flat River Baptist Association has dedicated their yearbook to Dr.
R. Hargus Taylor, professor of religion and chairman of the Department
of Religion and Philosophy, in appreciation for his new book, “Patners
in Missions and Ministry: A History of the Flat River Baptist Associa
tion.”
Five members of the faculty and staff have been recognized for their
contributions to education and will be included in the 1994-95 edition of
“Who’s Who Among American Teachers.” Included are Dr. David
Gowler, assistant professor of religion; L. M. Wallace, associate profes
sor of business; Rebecca McLawhorn, assistant professor of mathemat
ics; Patsy Taylor, instructor of business; and, William B. Sowell, director
of service enterprises and printing production.
Nancy B. Wackerbanh is now living in
Austin, Texas, where she is office manager of
“The Pharmacy,” the student health center, at
the University of Texas.
Wayne F. Munden is senior vice president
and director of lending at the Southwest
Virginia Savings Bank, in Vinton, VA.
Judy Monday Winstead now lives in Pinnacle
where she is the training officer for Surry
County Emergency Services. After graduating
from Chowan, she became a registered nurse at
the Wilson School of Nursing.
Woodrow S. Safrit received his bachelor’s
degree from Frederick College after he gradu
ated from Chowan. He also played several years
in the National Football League. He is now
president and owner of Resort F*roperties and
Formula Marketing, Inc., in Myrtle Beach, S. C.
William "Billy" Boswell, Jr, is principal of
Burkeville (VA) Intermediate School and lives
in Crewe. After graduating from Chowan, he
received his B.S. degree from Virginia Tech and
his master’s degree from Longwood College.
Carolyn VanNess Dooley is associated with
the Hanover County (VA) School Board. After
graduating from Chowan she received her
bachelor’s degree in education at Longwood
College. She is active in the Kentwood Heights
Baptist Church and is the mother of two
daughters.
Carolyn Overman Antis is a pre-kindergarten
teacher at the First Baptist Weekday School in
Suffolk, Va.
Clara N. Whitlock lives in Wilkesboro,
where she is a fifth grade teacher at Elkin City
Schools.
Jeanette Duncan Meekins now lives in
Virginia Beach, Va. She has retired from USAir
as a flight attendant.
Lianne Wille is a speech pathologist at Boces
3 in Centerport, New York. After graduating
from Chowan, “Yank” received both her B.A.
and M.S. degrees in speech pathology from
Adelphia University.
Peggy Rascoe Hate is coordinator of student
loan collections and assistant to the director of
personnel at Chowan College. She and her
husband, David, are the parents of one daughter,
Suzanna Marie.
Rudy Waters is a CARE coordinator with the
Martin County Board of Education and resides
in Pinetown.
Jane Elizabeth Taylor Williams lives in
Murfreesboro. She is the mother of a son,
Charles, Jr., and has been a school teacher for
23 years.
