Man§um elected as first president Foundation for Excellence in Business established to support, assist department Foundation formed to “make a good department even better’’ The Foundation for Excellence in Business has been established at Chowan College to enhance and support the college’s Department of Business and officers and directors were elected at the organizational meeting held earlier this fall. Mark Mangum, an Ahoskie banking execu tive, was elected as the foundation’s first president, with Tim Britton, also a banker of Ahoskie, as president-elect. Mrs. Dorothy Wallace will serve as secretary and Mrs. Renee Felts, treasurer. Mrs. Wallace, who also serves as chairperson of the Department of Business, said “we are delighted that the foundation has been formed for it will make a good department even better.” Membership in the foundation is open to all individuals and businesses who have a genuine interest in improving the workplace and the individuals who are involved in business. The foundation will seek financial support to supplement the academic programs in business as well as capital acquisitions to provide state- of-the-art facilities and technology for instruc tional purposes. “We will also seek persons from the business community to broaden student knowledge and awareness of the role of business in our soci ety,” Mrs. Wallace continued. “The foundation will also provide public service events to further develop and enrich the business training of those who live and work in the surrounding area,” she added. E. Vincent Tilson, vice president for devel opment at Chowan, said the leadership of area business leaders will “foster greater understand ing of and appreciation for the economic, ethical, and social role of business enterprise as a source of strength for the region.” Elected to serve as directors of the founda tion for a three-year term are Ray Dixon and Debbie Edwards of Murfreesboro, Taylor Oates of Roanoke Rapids, John W. Hawthorne, of Boykins, VA, and Mark Mangum of Ahoskie. Serving two-year terms as director are Tim Britton, Bobby Brown and Tom Hart of Ahoskie, Elizabeth Hall of Elizabeth City and Henry Revelle of Murfreesboro. Directors elected for a one-year term include Kemper Baker of Richmond, VA, Donna Jo Phillips of Murfreesboro, Camp Marks of Franklin, VA, Norman Mebane of Lewiston- Woodville, and Calvin Sheffield of Ahoskie. Two membership categories have been established. Individual memberships are $35 per year and businesses are $100 annually. Annual business meetings of the foundation will be held each fall and the Business Develop ment Dinner is scheduled each spring.
