Scholarship winners Ten students majoring in printing production and imaging technology were awarded $500.00 scholarships by the Printing Industries of the Carolinas (PICA) Foundation for their next year of study at Chowan College. The awards were based on the student’s academic ability, leadership potential and financial need. Krueger School of Graphic Communications) Nineteen seniors named to Who’s Who edition Awards based on academic achievement, service to community, extracurricular activities The 1995 edition of Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges will include the names of 19 seniors from Chowan College who have been selected as national outstanding leaders. Campus nominating committees and editors of the annual directory have included the names of these students based on their academic achievement, service to the community, leader ship in extracurricular activities and potential for continued success. They join an elite group of students selected from more than 1,800 institutions of higher learning in all 50 states, the Disuict of Colum bia and several foreign countries. Those students included are: Deborah Blowe Edwards, John Roy Ellis, Andrew Paul, Sheila Millet Lewis, Nancy B. Nelson and Mary Vance Hussein, all from Murfreesboro; Ann E. Levy of Como; Jessica Ruth Kiser of Suffolk, VA; Anita Ann Gaskins of New Bern; and Ronald Earl Barringer of Washington, NC. Also, Matthew Wayne Suggs of King George, VA; Phynese Nicole Lewis of Henderson; Billie Rae Pullen of Spotsylvania, VA; Carle Marie Culbertson of Fredericksburg, VA; Krista Lynne Fish of Blue Mountain Lake, NY. SECOND CLASS POSTAGE PAID AT MURFREESBORO, NORTH CAROLINA (27855) AND ADDITIONAL MAILING OFFICES Bass appointed to head Annual Giving efforts, annual ‘‘Day for Chowan” drive Laurie Bass, a native of Rutherford County, has been appointed Chowan College’s Director of Annual Giving and “Day for Chowan.” She assumed her position earlier this month and coordinated the college’s 1994 fund-raising event. “I am very pleased that Miss Bass has joined our staff,” said E. Vincent Tilson, vice president for development, “and 1 am confident that she will render outstanding service in this new position.” Bass, the daughter of the Rev. and Mrs. Richard Bass of Forest City, received her undergraduate degree at Gardner-Webb Univer sity. She has also completed one year of graduate work in counseling at Gardner-Webb. Prior to joining the Chowan development staff. Miss Bass was associated with the North Carolina Baptist Assembly at Fort Caswell and also has experience as a manager and buyer with a retail firm. “As Director of ‘Day for Chowan,’ Miss Bass will work with the steering committees, team captains and solicitors for this very important annual fund-raising effort of the college,” Tilson said. Whitley elected president of Ambassadors Suzanne Whitley, a business administration major from Conway, has been elected president of the Chowan Ambassadors for the 1994-95 academic year. A service organization to serve as hosts and hostesses at various functions of the college, the Chowan Ambassadors also serve as tour guides for prospective students and their families. With Kevin Clary, director of annual giving and alumni services as advisor, the Ambassadors participate in numerous college functions and work closely with the Office of the President as well as the Office of Development and the Office of Student Enrollment. James Dalton, a graphic communica tions major from New Bern, is vice president of the group. Lisa Askew, a junior from Murfreesboro, will fill the office of secretary. Whitley Death claims Felix Arnold, former trustee The Rev. J. Felix Arnold of 1840 Gleneagles Lane, Wilmington, died on Friday, September 30,1994. He was born in Mississippi on July 3, 1910. The Rev. Mr. Arnold was Pastor Emeritus of Enfield Baptist Church, where he had served as pastor for 28 years. He was a trustee of Chowan College for 22 years and served as Chairman of the Board for 11 years. He also served in the U. S. Navy as a chaplain on active during World Warn. He was a former moderator of the North Roanoke Baptist Association and a past presi dent of the Enfield Lions Club. Arnold served two terms on the General Board of the Baptist Slate Convention of North Carohna and 12 years on the Council on Christian Higher Education. He as a graduate of Mississippi College and Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and also completed special studies at Union Theological Seminary in New York City. Arnold was honored by the Board of Trustees when he last served as its chairman and was presented a plaque extolling his service to Chowan. He was cited for his contribution of “praiseworthy service to Chowan and for his wise counsel in the role of trustee and advisor.” A scholarship in his honor was established in 1991 by members of his family. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Frances Marks Arnold; five children, Felice (Mrs. L. J.) Parent, of Wilkesboro; Louann Clarke of Greensboro; Robert Marks Arnold of Raleigh; John “Jack” Arnold, Jr., of Chapel Hill; and Claude Camp Arnold of Wilmington. Ten grandchildren also survive. A memorial service was conducted on October 3 in First Baptist Church in Wilmington by Dr. Michael Queen. In lieu of flowers, the family requested that memorials be made to Chowan College.
