Jacultfj and Staff Jocus Dr. Hargus Taylor, chairman of the Depart ment of Religion and Philosophy, was the author for the January Sunday School commen taries in the Biblical Recorder. Two articles by Dr Kenneth Craig, assistant professor of religion, entitled “The Book of JonaH' and “The Book ofBanuch and the Letter to Jeremiah,” appeared in the current issue of Mercer Commentary on the Bible. Dr Carl Gairott, professor of language and literature, authored an article which was published by the Center for Applied Linguistics of Washington, D. C. Doug Eubank, associate professor of art, has accepted an invitation to serve as a member of the jury for the National Scholastic Arts Awards Program for the eastern North Carolina District. Tom Brennan, assistant professor and chairman of the Department of Printing Produc tion and Imaging Technology, has been invited to chair the North Carolina Graphic Communi cations Advisory Committee and to serve on the North Carolina Trade and Industrial Education Curriculum teams. James Garrison,\ict president for athletic administration, attended the January meeting of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) in San Deigo, California. Mrs. Yvonne F. Warren, RN, has been named Director of the Wellness Center. William B. Sowell, director of printing production and service enterprises, has been selected for inclusion in the 1994 edition of “Who’s Who Among Academic Teachers.” Dr Gladys DeJesus, associate professor of business, has been granted a one-semester leave of absence and is teaching this semester at the InterAmerican University in Arecibo, Puerto Rico. Tyler delivers address Ted Tyler, a candidate for the U. S. House of Representatives, was the featrued speaker for business studens and faculty entitled “When is Enough, Enough? Too Much Government?” Tyler commended on seven key areas which included balanced budgets, the capital gains tax, term limitations, crime control, health care, the military and gun control. Following his presentation in Marks Hall auditorium and sponsored by the Department of Business’ Mu Zeta Chapter of Phi Beta Lambda, Tyler responded to questions from the audience. Twelve printing majors win prestigious Gutenberg Awards in national contest Twelve students majoring in printing production and imaging technology have received international awards in the annual Gutenberg Awards Student Graphic Arts Contest held in Wisconsin/Stout in December. The national contest is sponsored by the International Graphic Arts Education Associa tion and the International Association of Printing House Craftsmen. Dennis Dunlow of Colerain, Judy Ivey of Edenton and Anita Gaskins of New Bern, each received First Place and Best of Show Awards and were presented medallions and certificates. Ivey’s award was for her work on the cover of Chowan’s 1994-95 Student Activities Calendar and Gaskins was recognized for the conventional pre-press work she did on the calendar cover. Dunlow, a ’94 graduate of the printing program, won his first place and Best of Show award for a book cover he created electroni cally. Dunlow also received a Certificate of Merit for a process color job he produced on Macintosh computers. DeLee Smith, a junior from Powell, WY, received a first place award for a three-color posterization produced by screen printing. She also received a Certificate of Merit for a project involving computers. Caroline Burch, a sophomore from New Bern, was awarded second place honors for her three-color posterization produced by screen printing. Stephen Brumfield, a sophomore from Nashville, earned a Certificate of Merit for his “Business Set,” which he produced electroni cally on computers. Students from all over the world enter the annual Gutenberg competition with entries in five educational divisions. Chowan’s students competed in one of the five classifications of the college and university division. The “Best of Show” winners are chosen from the entries of all first place winners and each receive a beautiful embossed and foil stamped certificate along with a medallion. Other winners received an embossed certificate . Angela Noe president of business honor society Angela Noe, a senior from Morehead City, has been elected president of Chowan’s Business Honor Society for the 1994-95 academic year. Serving as vice president is Sheilah Lewis, a senior from Murfreesboro, and Krista Fish, a senior from Blue Mountain Lake, NY, is treasurer. Kim VanRoekel, a sophomore from Portsmouth, VA, is secretary for the society. Sean Martin of Chesapeake, Va, is project chair, and Preston McElheney of Roanoke Rapids, will serve as program chair. The other members of the Business Honor Society are Ann Levy, Nancy Nelson, Linda Vaughan, Mary Hussein and John Ellis, all of Murfreesboro; Stacy Byrum, Christina Ober and Lisa Weaver of Edenton; and Richard Green of Pope Air Force Base.
