Frank Stephenson Chowan's library (shown above) has grown tremendously since 1949 when H was housed in the old "East Wing" of McDowell Columns. Note the shelves of books pictured and compare these to the present-day holding of almost 100,000 volumes in Whitaker Library. The Chowan Braves of 1949 were the first men's basketball team after the college re-opened. Pictured before their season opener, the team played their games on a court which was also the stage area of McDowell Columns. A group of students posed for the photographer in 1949 in one of the large rooms on the main floor of McDowell Columns. The area pictured now houses the college business office.
