Chowan's library (shown above) has grown
tremendously since 1949 when H was housed in
the old "East Wing" of McDowell Columns. Note
the shelves of books pictured and compare these
to the present-day holding of almost 100,000
volumes in Whitaker Library.
The Chowan Braves of 1949 were the first men's
basketball team after the college re-opened.
Pictured before their season opener, the team
played their games on a court which was also the
stage area of McDowell Columns. (Note: If you
can identify the any of the players or coaches,
please drop a note to the Office of Alumni
Services.)
A group of students posed for
the photographer in 1949 in one
of the large rooms on the main
floor of McDowell Columns. The
area pictured now houses the
college business office. (Note to
alumni: If you can identify any of
the students pictured, please
drop a note to the Office of
Alumni Sen/ices, or call the office
at (919) 398-4101, extension
