Alumni Happenings Ben Herndon {'67) is athletic director at Chancellor High School in Spotsylvania County, VA. Ben is currently serving as a member of the Chowan College Braves Club and is also chairman of the Battlefield District and Region 2 of Virginia Athletic directors. William E. (Bill) Fullaway {’85) attended Georgia Southern University after graduating from Chowan and was awarded a bachelor’s degree in printing management in 1987. He currently resides in Aurora, Ohio, and is associated with Automated Graphic Systems as sales manager. Marvin Daugherty (’71), a native of Kinston, has been promoted to chief meteorologist at Washington’s (NC) television station, WITN- TV, Channel 7. Daugherty has served as weekend meteorologist for the past 12 years. John Michael Rhea (’89) and Tina Darlene Crouse were married on December 17,1994, at Fredericksburg Baptist Church, Fredericksburg, VA. The couple will make their home in Stafford, VA, where he is associated with Lowe’s and she teaches at King George Middle School. Mrs. Ruby Edens Bivens (’37) taught in Union County and Monroe City schools for 39 years. She and her husband have lived in Wingate for the past 54 years and they have one son who is a stock analyst in New York. The couple also has two grandsons. Marvin Lewter Gibson, Jr (’52), who served as a major and assistant chief of police, has retired as a law enforcement officer. He is presently associated with Walter Kidde Aerospace in Wilson as a supervisor of the department of security. Christina E. Perkinson (’94)of Suffolk, and Henry L. Thornburg III of Norfolk, will be married on September 16. Christina is currently associated with Teagle and Little, Inc., and Mr. Thornburg will graduate from Old Dominion University in August with a B.S. in biology. Mrs. Peggy Brown Ruffin (’56) received her bachelor’s degree from East Carolina University in 1958 and taught school in North Carolina for one year. She retired in 1993 after teaching in Virginia Beach, VA, for 30 years. William Nathan Waid (’89) and Jennifer Leigh McGlohn, both of Poquoson, VA, were married Feb. 25,1995, at Tabernacle United Methodist Church. The couple will reside in Poquoson where he is owner of For Yogurt Sake, Inc., and she is a staff accountant at Mary Immaculate Hospital. Marlon Stone (’91) of Charlotte, was awarded a bachelor’s degree in management information systems by UNC-Charlotte during commencement exercises in May. Ann Carleton Davis (’72) of Locust Hill, VA, and Linwood Blayne Gresham (’71) of West Point, VA, will be married In July. Ann is director of staff development at Mizpah Health Care Center in Locust Hill, and Linwood is associated with Chesapeake Paper Products Company. Mrs. Louise Wimbish Jennings (’56) is now associate director of Kingsway Prison Minis tries, Inc., in Harrisonburg, VA. Mrs. Carroll Bradley Johnson (’56) is married to Reynold R. Johnson, who is retired to Cedar Cruk Country Club in Kemp Texas. Joseph C. Epps III (’91) of Wakefield, VA, and Cheryl Lynn King of Ivor, VA, were married on April 22, in Virginia Beach. The new bridegroom is manager of Carroll’s, in Ivor, and his wife is a student at Old Dominion Univer sity. AlumnlMotes -Profile of an Alumnus Lewis appointed Civil Magistrate of Charlotte’s 26th Judicial District Hugh Banks Lewis, a graduate in the Class of 1977, has been appointed Civil Magistrate of the 26th Judicial District of the State of North CaroUna. In his new judicial duties, Lewis will pre side over cases which involve monetary dis putes of $3,000 or less, landlord/tenant disputes relating to eviction and determination and dis tribution of years allowances from decedents’ estates. Lewis will also be authorized to conduct civil marriages. The son of Mr. and Mrs. R. Clayton Lewis of Mur freesboro, the new magis trate lives in Charlotte with his wife, Barbara, and two sons. Hunter and Justin. Lewis was awarded an associate degree in printing technology and also the associate’s in professional photography before transfer ring to Rochester Institute of Technology where he earned the baccalaureate degree in photography. Both of Lewis’ degrees from Chowan were awarded magna cum laude. After graduating from RIT, Lewis estab lished a commerical photography business in Charlotte. The business, which became quite successful, was involved in all types of pho tography but specialized in producing photo graphs for high-quality annual reports. Presiding over cases in Small Claims Court is a long way from Lewis’ chosen career as a free lance photo journalist. “The self-discipline 1 gained at Chowan College,” Lewis testified, “made my transition from art to law possible.” In 1986 an opportunity arose for Lewis to sell his commercial photography studio in Charlotte, Shooter’s Photographic, Inc., and at that time he decided on an abrupt career Hugh Banks Lewis . .. Class of 1977 change and entered law school. Upon graduation from the Norman Adrian Wiggins School of Law at Campbell Univer sity in May, 1991, Lewis returned to Charlotte to practice law. He worked under the guidance of the late James J. Caldwell to obtain experi ence necessary to become a litigator. “Unfortunately,” Lewis related, “Mr. Caldwell’s sudden decline in health left me with a full fledged law practice just a few months after I had gradu ated from law school.” “Again, the self-discipline I learned at Chowan helped me to succeed under such dif ficult circumstances,” he confessed. The new judge acknowl edges that it was the aid and support he received from the clerks, bailiffs, judiciary and fellow attorneys that kept him from falling into the many ttaps that surround an inexperienced litigator. “Without their guidance, advice and help,” he said, “I do not feel that I could have become an effective litigator in such a short period of time.” Lewis expressed his appreciation to this group of individuals and said he felt honored that they suggested and promoted his appoint ment as Civil Magisttate of the 26th Judicial District. While a student in Campbell, Lewis won the North Carolina Academy of Trial Lawyers Stu dent Advocate Award which was published in the Campbell Law Review. He was also inducted into Order of the Sil ver Feather upon his graduation from Chowan in tribute to his “service to the institution and potential for future success.” Lewis received degrees in printing and photography from Chowan; operated a successful photography business in Charlotte prior to entering law school Ronald Sowers (’63) assumed the pastorate of the Western Heights Baptist Church in Petersburg, VA, on March 1 after serving the Newville Baptist Church in Sussex County, VA, for 13 years. Anthony Walker (’89) and Tera L. Bennett, both of Danville, VA, were married on April 15 at Oak Grove Baptist Church in Blairs, VA. The new bride is a registered nurse with the South ern Virginia Mental health Instimte and the groom is a counselor for the W. W. Moore Detention Home and is also owner of a hair salon in Danville. Kimberly Anne Soter (’90) and Samuel Gordon Clark III were married April 8,1995, in Trinity United Methodist Church, Newport News, VA. The couple will reside in Richmond where she is associated with WMXB radio station and he is with Meatmaster Brockerage Inc. A group of Richmond (VA) area alumni enjoyed a river cruise for their recent chapter meeting.
