Jim Garrison has set a record at Chowan which is unlilely to be brolen; he has coached hundreds of young men in football and guided the college athletic programs from infancy to national recognition. Legend leaves a legacy James G. Garrison retires from football coaching; named Director of Braves Club Pj AMES G. GARRISON, a coaching legend who . 1;; guided Chowan College’s athletic program from infancy into the ranks of NCAA Division III, ended his 37-year football coaching career with the Chowan Braves on June 1 to lake on new responsibilities as Director of the Braves Club. Garrison, who leaves a gridiron legacy and a coaching record which is unlikely to be matched or broken, will continue to serve as Vice President for Athletic Administra tion as well as teach several classes in physical education and coach the golf team. Dan Surface has been named head football coach and will replace Garrison at the helm of the Braves for the 1995 season. Surface is presently serving as defensive coordina tor on the coaching staff and teaches several courses in physical education. Several other re-assignments are being made in conjunction with the change in the football coaching staff. In his new position Garrison will maintain close contact with the former players and athletes to raise funds for Chowan’s athletic programs. “Jim Garrison is truly loved and respected by all athletes of Chowan College—past and present,” said Dr. Jerry F. Jackson, president of the college, “and we are delighted that he has accepted this new challenge to raise Chowan athletics to greater levels.” “He is the only person on our staff who can effectively fill this role,” he continued, “and the success of this position is imperative to the life and progress of our program.” Jackson praised Garrison’s commitment and loyalty to the college and said “there very few people more dedicated to this institution than Jim Garrison.” The college president also cited Garrison’s “many, many outstanding and significant contributions” which have been Continued on Next Page Garrison beams proudly after winning the first annual Peanut Bowl.
