I never thought of such a thing ... and it never crossed my mind,” Lewis exclaimed. “Many people have done much more than I have done, but I do appreciate the award and I am grateful.” In making the presentation. Brown let the identity of the recipient slip out early in his remarks when he said the winner was a native of Horry County, S. C. “I didn’t think there was anyone else in the audience from Horry County,” Lewis noted. A graduate of Wake Forest and East Carolina Universities, Lewis served as dean of students from 1968 to 1990 and then took a new position as director of corporate and foundation relations.
