DevelopmentAf^ws ^ Commemoration services highlight renovation, refurbishing of Daniel Hall The memories and many contributions to Chowan College of Jeannette Snead Daniel and her husband, Walter Eugene Daniel, were celebrated April 25 when commemoration services were held in the recently renovated and refurbished Daniel Hall. The building—^named in honor of Jeannette Snead Daniel who was a member of the 1885-86 Chowan College faculty — was refurbished through the generosity of the couple’s descen dants. Currently housing the Department of Fine Arts and its Division of Music, Daniel Hall was dedicated September 12,1968. Its construction was made possible largely by gifts of the late Dr. Donald Snead Daniel, of Richmond, on behalf of himself and his brothers and sisters, to honor the memory of his mother. The refurbishing of the facility was made possible by contributions of the Daniel descen dants following a family reunion held on campus in March 1993. E. Vincent Tilson, vice president for develop ment, said “we are, indeed, delighted and so very grateful to the Daniel family for their most significant conttibution to improve the structure which carries their family name.” Improvements to Daniel Hall include the renovation of a practice room for choral groups, an energy-saving enttance, a redecorated and furbished lobby, refurbished classrooms for students, an electronic music studio, an ex panded music library, freshly painted and re tiled hallways, classrooms and offices and carpeted stair landings. Structural improvements were new heating and air-conditioning systems and extensive repairs to the roof. Landscaping around Daniel Hall was also provided by funds gifted during the campaign. Holding was accompanied to the reception at the Ella Cobb Camp President’s Home by hArs. Shirley Brown, center Emily Fisher and Narcissa Titman, co-chairs of the Daniel campaign, said “this is our way to give back to the region which has given us support and our roots. This is a way of paying you back.” The commemoration services began at noon when family members and their spouses gathered for a reception in Ward Parlor and then were guests at a luncheon in the President’s Dining Room of Thomas Cafeteria. Dr. Jerry F. Jackson, president of the college, presided at the afternoon’s commemoration services. E. Vincent Tilson, vice president for development, recognized the Daniel family members and other special guests after a prayer was given by Mrs. Charles R. Daniel, Sr. Mrs. Elaine E. Myers, chair of the Board of ‘We are indebted to your generosity and kindness. ” -Elaine E. Myers Chair, Board of Trustees Trustees, told the Daniel family “you have given us a lot of hope ... you have accomplished much. We are indebted to your generosity and kindness.” “This is a good day for the arts,” said Dr. James M. Chamblee, chairman of the Depart ment of Fine Arts. “The visual arts have survived because of a few courageous persons and we have been twice blessed by the Daniel family.” Words of appreciation were also brought by James Eason, vice chairman of the Board of Visitors. Charles R. Daniel, Jr., an editorial cartoonist with The Knoxville News Sentinel , responded on behalf of the Daniel family. The unveiling of the coimnemorative plaque was by Mrs. Emily Fisher and Dr. Donald S. Daniel, Jr. Dr. Jackson presented both Mrs. Fisher and Mrs. Hargroves miniature reproduc tions of the commemorative plaque and an engraved paperweight. Following an open house which concluded the commemoration services, Mrs. Ella Ann Holding, a renowned pianist and the first artist- in-residence of Campbell University, presented a concert in the recital hall. Jackson hosted the Daniel family members and friends of the college at a reception and dinner at the Ella Cobb Camp President’s Home. The day’s formal activities concluded with the annual Spring Concert of Chowan’s band and choir in Turner Auditorium following the reception. Mrs. Charles R.
