Alumni and Campus Happenings Eubank’s work selected for prestigious exhibit By RANDY BRANTLEY Director of College Relations The American Craft Council Southeast Region has notified Doug Eubank, associate professor of visual arts, that a piece of his pottery will be included in the council’s “Spotlight 95” exhibition. The exhibit opened at the Museum of Fine Arts, St. Petersburg, FL, then travels to the Kentuck Museum, Northpori, AL, and concludes at the Doug Eubank, associate professor of visual arts, displays one of his contemporary teapots similar to the one selected for the prestigious American Craft Council Southeast Region “Spotlight 95" exhibit. Atlanta International Museum of Art and Design on May 4. Bill Su-ickland, director of the Manchester Craft Guild in Pittsburgh, PA, selected 80 pieces of craftwork from among 881 entries submitted by 319 artists. Eubank’s work selected for the prestigious exhibit is a contemporary teapot, which has triangular and abstract features. The hand-built slab pot is made of stoneware clay and was salt fired. Eubank rolls out three separate slabs of clay to form the two sides and the bottom of the sculp ture. A piece of foam rubber is placed in the middle of the work until the edges are molded together. When completed, the teapot is functional. The artist’s teapot aeations have evolved dramatically over the past five years. Two years ago at Chowan, Lisa Anderson of Wilson, exhibited tea pots she had collected over the course of 30 years. After studying the collection for many hours, Eubank was inspired to sculpt contemporary teapots. Previously, the artist made “tfaditional teapots on the potter’s wheel.” Eubank is excited about the progress of his work. In May of this year, one of his teapots won first prize at the Rocky Mount, (NC) Outdoor Art Show in the three-dimensional category. The teapot sold for $200 at the show. Eubank exhibited two teapots at the Rawls Museum in Courtland, VA, where he won a second prize award. The artist contributes his recent success to “getting off the potter’s wheel and doing more sculptural work.” Louisburg College exhibited a collection of Eubank’s work during the month of November. The collection consisted of color pencil drawings, handmade paper, and functional and non-functional stoneware clay works, Eubank explained that “while working in a cycle, there is usually a thread that carries through drawings, paper, and clay. Sometimes the thread consists of lines and shapes, easily seen. At other moments, the thread quietly waits, under the surface.” Eubank earned the master’s degree in art and higher education at Morehead State University in Morehead, KY, and has served as a member of the Chowan art faculty a total of 20 years.
