Dr. Stanley Lott named 21st president

Robert B. Spivey, chair of the Chowan
College Board of Trustees, announced that Dr,
Stanley G. Lott of Pineville, LA, has been
selected as Chowan’s next president, Lott will
become the 21st president in the institution’s
148 year history.
Regarding Lott’s selection, Spivey com
mented, “After an intensive nine month search,
the Board of Trustees is pleased that someone of
Dr, Lott’s ability will be taking the reigns at this
critical point in Chowan’s history. In the midst
of its transition to four-year status, the institu
tion is poised to become an education leader in
the region. Dr, Lott brings great wisdom and
experience to the office of president.”
In response, Lott stated, “I am deeply
grateful and humbled by the trust and confi
dence placed in me by the faculty, staff, students
and trustees of Chowan College. Leading an
institution is an awesome and complex responsi
bility demanding the best that all of us have to
give.
“Chowan has a storied past and a promising
future, and I look forward to joining hands with
the insicte,,.

boldly into the 21st century. I am also eager to
join North Carolina Baptists in their efforts to
spread the gospel and to preserve historic
Baptist principles.”
A number of Lott’s close friends and col
leagues offered words of congratulations. Dr. R.
Kirby Godsey, president of Mercer University in
Macon, GA, cited Lott as “one of the finest
educators and leaders in higher education

today.” Godsey added, “By his own education,
experience, and character. Dr, Stanley Lott will
bring extraordinary leadership to Chowan
College and will assure that Chowan becomes a
recognized and respected presence among the
senior colleges of North Carolina.”
Lott holds two earned doctorates. He
completed the doctor of education in higher
education administration at the University of
Georgia, Athens, in 1981. Lott is a 1968
graduate of New Orleans Baptist Theological
Seminary, where he earned both the doctor of
theology in systematic theology and the bach
elor of divinity degree. He completed under
graduate work in sociology at Louisiana College
in 1957, In addition to his academic degrees,
Lott completed the College Management
Program at Carnegie-Mellon University in 1986.
Presently Lott serves as vice president for
academic affairs at his alma mater, Louisiana
College, a position he has held for fifteen years.

During his tenure, he served as acting president
of the college in the summers of 1985 and 1989,
From 1967-80, Lott was professor of sociology
and religion at Tift College in Forsyth, Ga,
Lott holds membership in several profes
sional organizations, including the American
Association of Higher Education and the
Council of Independent Colleges. He is a past
president of the Conference of Academic Deans
of Southern States, During 1993-94, Lott served
as president of the Dean’s Group of the Associa
tion of Baptist Colleges and Schools,
Dr. Larry Taylor of Emmanuel Baptist
Church in Alexandria, LA, has been pastor to
the Lotts for 11 years. Taylor stated, “My wife
and I regard the Lotts as people of great
character and integrity. Dr. Lott has always been
an articulate spokesperson for Christian higher
education. His wife, Johnnye, is a supportive
spouse and a capable person in her own right.
Simply stated, they are premiere people.”
In addition to his teaching responsibilities,
Lott has held two pastorates in Louisiana, As a
member of Emmanuel Baptist, he has served the
church as deacon, Sunday School teacher and
chair of the finance committee.
Among other community service activities,
Lott has served on the board of trustees of the
Alexandria Museum of Art and as a member of
the city’s Chamber of Commerce.
Lott is married to Johnnye Jo Foshee. Mrs.
Lott earned the bachelor of music education at
Northwestern State University. She is certified
in music, language arts and gifted education.
Mrs. Lott currently manages a Sylvan Learning
Center, which the couple owns.
The Board of Trustees employed Academic
Search Consultation Service of Washington,
D.C., to assist with the selection of the presi
dent. The agency has worked with nearly 400
