/Uumni^otes h— Cal Bryant, Class of 73, wins three awards for newspaper work Calvin Bryant, Class of 1973, was the recipient of three prestigious awards in three separate categories at the 1995 North Carolina Press Association’s News-Editorial and Photo- joumalisni Contest. Bryant and other winners in the contest were honored at a special editorial awards ceremony in Chapel Hill in late January. North Carolina Governor James B. Hunt, Jr., made the presenta tions at the William & Ida Friday Continuing Education Center on the campus of the Univer sity of North Carolina. A reception honoring the winners followed the presentation ceremonies. Currently the sports editor and photographer for Park Newspapers of northeastern North Carolina, Bryant won first place honors in both feature photography and sports writing, as well as a third place award in sports columns. Working out of the offices of The News- Herald'm Ahoskie, Bryant is a frequent con tributor to Chowan Today with feature articles on Chowan’s athletic programs. Park General Manager Joe Vaughan said, “Cal is an outstanding photographer and writer and he is a real asset to this newspaper com pany. He was long overdue in receiving recogni tion for his ability.” CAL BRYANT ... sports editor of local newpaper Vaughan continued, “Unfortunately, no plaque can truly reflect a person’s commitment to his community or service to his fellowman. Cal often goes beyond his professional responsi bilities to make a difference in the lives of young people living in the Roanoke-Chowan area. There is no award that honors such dedication, but he certainly has my gratitude.” The award-winning photograph was one Bryant made of a tug-of-war contest during a local high school field day. His sports story was a preview of the Hertford versus Bertie High School football game. The sports column award was for three entries culled from a large collection of Bryant’s weekly “Cal’s Comer.” Bryant maintained that his recognition came with help and assistance from many of his friends and associates. “The awards were due to the team concept used at The News-Herald,” the award winner said, “and also for the outstanding athletic talent and great leadership of area coaches.” Bryant has been associated with newspaper work since 1973, except for a two-year stint with the North Carolina Forest Service. He is a 1971 graduate of Northampton County High School and a 1973 graduate of Chowan College with an associate’s degree in graphic arts. Bryant was named sports editor of The News-Herald in 1989 after working in pre press production areas for a number of years. After receiving the three awards, Bryant said, “It is the understanding of a proverbial sports widow, my wife Deborah, that has allowed me to spend countless hours away from my family in order to fulfill the demands placed upon me to cover the athletic events in our area.” Alumni notes ...
