Lindsay, Kocher building strong tennis programs By JACK GOLDBERG Sports Information Officer In their first season as head coach, Jon Lindsay and Pam Kocher have their respective men’s and women’s tennis programs focused and pre pared for the season ahead. Lindsay’s team is off to an 0-2 start but have been very competitive with junior Quoc Nguyen of Hagerstown, MD, and Sean McClafferty of Orlando, FL, winning their single matches against Ferrum College. Nguyen teamed up with Brian Surface of Murfreesboro to win their doubles match in an 8-1 loss to Division III powerhouse Randolph- Macon. With a roster dotted with underclassmen, the Braves look to gain valuable experience as they face a very competitive schedule this spring. The Lady Braves have been working very hard in preparation for the 1996 season. Kocher has on her squad of eight ladies three returning players in juniors Chea Zollo of Currituck and Dawn Worley of Spring field, VA, who team up with sophomore Stacey Lynn of Suffolk, VA, to form a solid nucleus for the team. Transfer Meg Jackson of Franklin, VA, will give Kocher added experience after playing two years at Longwood College. Jackson, who is projected to be the number 1 singles player, has been impressive in the early season workouts and will be counted on to provide leadership to a young tennis team. With four matches scheduled against NCAA Division II opponents this season, the Lady Braves should be very competitive as Kocher continues to establish a sffong program. Earn six Division HI victories Women’s basketball squad building strong foundation By JACK GOLDBERG, Sports Information Officer The Lady Braves, under Head Coach Jeannette Alston, set a new standard and built a solid foundation for the women’s basketball program this year. Utilizing a stfong work ethic and dedication, the Lady Braves surpassed last year’s win total by earning six victories over NCAA Division III opponents. The Lady Braves began their season in a positive manner, defeating Bennett College 48-43 and closed the year by knocking off Hood College by a score of 59-33. Alston and her Lady Braves put “W’s” in the column twice against Wilson and Villa-Julie College in a year that saw them set a new record for victories as a four-year program. Junior forward Judy Wilkerson, of Franklin, VA, played a major role in the Lady Braves’ success this season and set several career and school records. She set a new standard of excellence this season by recording 13 “double-doubles,” which is a career high for her as well as a new school record. Also falling by the wayside because of Wilkerson’s hard work was the school’s record for rebounds in a game, which she eclipsed with 19 boards on two separate occasion's this season. Armed with a squad of seven young ladies, Alston got the maximum effort from them as they never gave up to more seasoned and veteran teams that marked their schedule. This year’s only senior, Judy Enteman, of Chesterfield, VA, etched her name in the Chowan sports record book by becoming the first Lady Brave to play foiu' years in the famed “blue and white.” Enteman provided leadership and maturity to a young squad, and she will always be remem bered for her dedication to the program. With a strong foundation in women’s basketball, Coach Alston has set her sights on continuing to build upon the success of the 1995-96 season. With Wilkerson returning for her senior year and a strong recruitment effort by Alston, the Lady Braves can re-establish themselves as a program on the rise. 1996 yjaseball Schedule FEBRUARY 10 Coker College 1:00 Away 11 Pfeiffer College 12:00 Away 14 Barton College 2:30 Away 17 Christopher Newport University 1:00 Home 20 Christopher Newport University 2:00 Away 23 Oglethrope/Greensboro 24,25 Emory/Ferru m/Flhodes TBA Away MARCH 3 Marywood Colfege 2:00 Home 4 Marywood College 3:00 Home 6 Johnson & Wales Universfty 2:00 Home 7 Loras College 2:00 Home 8 Elizabeth City Slate University 2:00 Away 9 Mercy hurst College 12:00 Away 10 Virginia Wesleyan College 4:00 Away 13 Shenandoah University 2:00 Home 14 Shenandoah University 2:00 Home 16 Mt.
