Alumni, former students keep in touch with alma mater Many graduates now teaching at other institutions Class of 1927 Mrs. Margaret West Pollock attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill after graduating from Chowan and then taught school for several years. The mother of two children. Mrs. Pollock recently celebrated her 90th birthday and is now living in the Baptist Home in Albemarle, which is near her daughter who lives in Mooresville. Class of 1929 Mrs. Mary Crantham Whitley is a retired classroom teacher with 45 years of e.xperience. Class of 1951 Timothy Guy Harcum Jr., has retired from Champion International Corporation as a cost accountant. He is married to Mrs. Jane Story Harcum. a retired rural mail carrier, and the couple has three children. Their son. Timothy C. Harcum III is a rural mail carrier in Franklin. Va., and their daughter. Mrs. Janet H. Brinkley, is a pharmacist at Virginia Beach General Hospital. She is the mother of a son. and her husband is a sports editor for The Virginian-Pilot. Mrs. Betty C. Appleby is married to “Smokey” Appleby and they have two grand daughters. ages 19 and 2. Mrs. Appleby retired from Union Camp in Franklin, \&., and her husband is retired from the U. S. Navy and Union Camp. Two of Mrs. Appleby’s sisters, who live in Franklin, attended Chowan College. Polly Confrey Cook, was in the Class of 1954, and “Abie” Condrey, was in the Class of 1950- 51. Class of 1952 Dr. William E. Betty Smith Thompson, and they are both graduates of Chowan College. Dr. Thompson is chief of Chaplain Services at Veterans' Medical Center in La Jolla. Calif, and Mrs. Thompson is a resource specialist at Los Alamitos High School. Los Alamitos. Calif Class of 1957 Thomas L. Davis retired on December 31, 1994, after 35 years in education in North Carolina. He was superintendent of Carteret County schools at the time of his retirement. Class of 1959 Mrs. Mitzi O. Kellum is now the wedding coordinator for Taylor Chapel United Methodist Church in Fort Wayne. Ind. Class of 1962 Mrs. Mary ann Wilshire Crowder was recently promoted to Executive Director of the Virginia Association of Chamber of Commerce Execu tives and also serves as administrator for the board of directors at the Virginia Chamber of Commerce in Richmond. Va.. She has two daughters and two granddaughters and is married to Willie Crowder, who graduated from Chowan in 1960. Mrs. Donald Rose McGhee is currently teaching fourth grade at Louisburg Elementary School. John P. Upton Jr, is currently enrolled part- time at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest. After retirement from his position as director of Environmental Health at Durham County Health Department, he hopes to begin a “second career” as a minister His daughter, Mary, graduated from St. Mary’s High School this spring and plans to attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Class of 1963 Dallas Nance is currently chairman of the board of trustees at Surry Community College; chairman of the Fifth Congressional District Republican Party; Marketing Education Teacher and Coordinator for Elkin High School; and past president of the North Carolina Marketing Education Association. Class of 1964 Mrs. Patricia A. Etheridge graduated from Salem College with a bachelor’s degree in 1988 and was awarded her master’s degree from Wake Forest University in 1994. Ms. Lianne Wille is currently a speech/ language pathologist and is working in a middle school for handicapped students. She is married to Ken Wille who is an engineer/president of K. O, Wille and Associates. Inc., in New York City. They have three children—two are graduates of Penn State University and the other currently attends Oneonta State in New York. Class of 1965 Terry L. Flahive is a master chef in the U.S. Navy and is attached to the staff of Commander Naval Air Reserve Force in New Orleans. He is married to Billie Dean Graham, a Chowan graduate in the Class of 1966. Class of 1966 Upon leaving Chowan with an associate’s degree in 1966, Wayne T. Collins attended the University of Richmond. He “walked on” the football team at the university and earned a full scholarship by starting as a linebacker both his junior and senior years. Collins earned All- Southern Conference and All-Big Five honors in 1967 and graduated Phi Beta Kappa in 1968. He coached and taught high school for 11 years before joining New York Life Insurance Com pany in 1979. He has qualified for the Million Dollar Round Table every year since 1980, which is an honor only 5 percent of the agents all over the world receive. Class of 1967 Lewis N. Terrell is vice president and retail services officer of Branch Bank and Trust Company in Winston-Salem. Class of 1969 Mrs. Claudia Markham Rader is LifeUne Coordinator for Riverside Regional Medical Center in Newport News. Va. Mrs. Rader is continuing her education at St. Leo College, where she is majoring in sociology. Class of 1970 Tom Alligood has joined Century 21 Murphy and Rudolph in Charlotte. He has been named area sales manager for Brookwook Homebuilders and will market new homes in their Jordan’s Pond community in northern Mecklenburg County, Class of 1971 Roy Douglas Lowe is presently employed with King Roofing and Manufacturing Corpora tion in the HVAC Sales and Installation as an estimator Mrs. Gala McAdoo Goldfarb works part-time with Avis. She is married to Steve Goldfarb. who is a 1972 Chowan graduate and holds a management position at HQ. They have one daughter, Suzanne, who is 12 years old. Class of 1972 Ms. Judy Davis has been promoted to director of administration of the Raleigh office of Ernst & Young, LLP. Class of 1974 Robert J. Lavelle has been a contract specialist with the Department of the Army since December. 1981. For the last seven years he has specialized in research/development contracts and research/education grants. Lavelle has been married since November 1986 and has one son, Michael, age 28 months. Class of 1975 Larry W. Peregory is the father of triplets bom October 12,1994. Their names are Brad, Laiu'a and Allison Peregory. Class of 1976 Mrs. Sandra H. Totten is currently teaching third grade in the Chowan County school system. She has two children, Ashley, age 11, and Callie, age 3. Her husband, Billy Totten, who is also a Chowan graduate in the Class of 1976, is superintendent at Jordan Lake State Paik. Mrs. Lyn Griggs Mills has been married for almost 14 years to Skeeter Mills and they have two sons, Travis, age 10, and Alex, age 7. Mrs. Mills teaches high school business computer classes and is also the junior class sponsor. Wesley Neal Daughtry is employed by Joyner Library, East Carolina University. As a library technical assistant, he is responsible for the receipt and payment of journal subscrip tions and reference materials. Class of 1977 James L. Barnett is a senior computer systems analyst for Student Loan Marketing Association. He is also a telecommunications specialist for training and computer consulting and electronic publishing. Class of 1978 Deidre L. Christopher and Peter S. Palmer were married on August 11,1991 and thecouple has one son, Patrick, who is 3 years old. They live in SaUsbury, Md,, where Mrs. Palmer is currently a kindergarten teacher in Wicomico County. Class of 1979 Thomas M.
