Focus on Faculty, Staff
John W. Luton, adjunct professor in Old
Testament, was invited to read two papers before
the faculty of Baltimore Hebrew University in
April. His papers, which were prepared in con
junction with a graduate course in which he is
currently enrolled, were entitled: “The Role of the
Female Sage in Ancient Israel.” and “The Absur
dity of Wisdom in an Absurd World.”
Dr. R Hargus Taylor, professor of religion and
chairman of the department of religion and
philosophy, was elected to a three-year term on
the Coordinating Council, CBF of North Carolina,
at the annual meeting of that body in Fayetteville,
March 22-23. CBF of North Carolina is the state
affiliate of the National Cooperative Baptist
Fellowship with headquarters in Atlanta, Ga.
Patsy Taylor, assistant professor of business,
has been selected for the 1996 edition of Who's
n'ho Among America's Teachers.
Sarah Davis, a member of the department of
academic support, attended the Biennial English
Discipline Peer Group Conference of the Virginia
Community College System which met in
Charlottesville. Va., April 11-12, and presented a
paper, “Have Red Pen. Will Travel,” that ad
dressed concerns of adjuncts as related to their
students.
Gladys A. DeJesus. associate professor of
economics, participated in a workshop last month
at East Carolina University. The workshop,
sponsored by ECU’s department of economics,
was structured around the presentation of a paper
entitled, “Regional Productivity and Efficiency in
theU. S.: Effects of Business Cycles and Public
Capital.” The author and presenter. Dr. Kathy
Hayes, teaches at Southern Methodist University
and is currently working at the Federal Reserve
Bank of Dallas.
Dr. Rick Gay was selected to present his
paper, “A Liberal Arts College; Work in Progress.”
at the conference Liberal Arts and the Future of
University Education in May. The gathering was
the second International Conference sponsored
t(\ the Centre for Interdisciplinary Research in the
Liberal Arts (CIRLA) at Augustana University

Dr. Jackson Is now
serving as vice
president for univer
sity relations at
Samford University
in Birmingham.
College and was held at the Banff Centree for
Conference, Banff, Alberta, Canada.
Geraldine Harris and Linda Hassell, of
Whitaker Library, attended two SOLINET
(Southeastern Library Network) workshops
earlier this spring. In February, they attended
the “Format Integration” workshop at the
North Carolina Department of Community
Colleges in Raleigh, and in March they
attended the “Union Listing Basics” at the
Roanoke (Va.) City Public Library.
Dr. Nancy Duke gave a presentation on
oral history and the method of conducting an
oral history interview to Ms. Linda Hofleur’s
history class at Gates County High School. Dr.
Duke gave the students a background on the
nature of oral history research and its integra
tion into traditional historical research an also
presented practical tips on developing ques
tions to make the interview subjects more
comfortable during the interview. Dr. Duke, who
conducted several oral history interviews while
attending Florida State University, will soon
begin interviewing older alumni for an oral
history college on Chowan College.
