/4£u^PUtC Grad celebrates 100th birthday; other alumni report happenings Class of 1914 Mary Morris Alston Keeter celebrated her 100th birthday July 21, 1996. She remembers her Chowatt days fondly During her college years she was class president, captain of her basket ball team, member of the Societa Italiana. the Taffy Club, the Air Castle Builders Club and the tenni; club. Mrs. Keeter was valedictorian of her gradu ating class and won the Annie Baily Medal for English. Her senior thesis was entitled, “Thackeray's Injustice to Women.” Mrs. Keeter was bom in Powellsville and had to travel by train and boat to get to Chowan. She had several teaching positions before marrying John Byron Keeter and settling in Kings Mountain. NC. She has two daughters, seven grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Keeter is a member of Kings Mountain Baptist Church. Class of 1957 Sarah Virginia Parker assumed a new position at the American Embassy, Manila. Philippines on August 1, 1996. She is now serving as the ambassador’s secretary. Class of 1962 Sandra Clark Dunagan lives in Monument. Colorado, and works as a travel assistant at the Air Force Academy. Her husband. Mike, is a retired Army aviator and works as marketing director for Prescott’s, Inc. Their son. Michael, is a recent graduate of the Air Force Academy and is stationed at Falcon AFB. Their daugh ter, Shannon, is soon to graduate from the University of Northern Colorado as a dance and kinesiology major Class of 1964 Doris Lewis became one of eight Oakwood Homes Corporation’s Third Quarter Quality Award Winners on August 6. The eight were members of a team that won the award for revising a process to eliminate waste. The group received the award for creating a better work flow and eliminating waste caused by improvements made to the homes during production. The Student Government Association is becoming a vital component of student life at Chowan College. Our duty is to represent the interests of the students. We are an essential instrument in preserving your rights and increasing your awareness of your responsibili ties to the college and each other With a strong SGA. Chowan students can be proud of the college as a whole. I want to make every effort to increase school spirit. This effort must be directed toward the prosperity of clubs and organizations on Chowan's campus. With the Organizational Activity Fee. the Student Government will be able to appropriate funding to clubs to use in activities each will sponsor. Along with the various activities offered on campus, there is an extensive student-faculty interaction. You will find yourself forming interpersonal relationships naturally with the faculty and staff. Chowan’s campus community offers personal exchange between faculty and students inside and outside the classroom. The Student Government Association is here for fellow students to voice their opinions on matters important to the student body. The SGA serves as the essential link between the student body, faculty, administration and the trustees. Your Student Government Associa tion encourages and depends on your partici pation and input. We each have an important role to play as students at Chowan College. You have the opportunity to make a difference in your life and in the lives of students around you. Again. I want to welcome you to the Chowan College community. I encourage you to become involved, and 1 hope to work with each of you soon. This is your campus. Take hold of the opportunity and make your four years here the experience of a lifetime. m % i GETTING INVOLVED WITH CAMPUS LIFE—More than 25 clubs and organiza tions provided information for prospective members at a ‘club fair" in Thomas Cafeteria at the beginning of the fall semester The event, sponsored by the Student Government Association and Student Life Office, provides students opportunities to learn about various campus organizations and to apply for membership. Club officers and faculty advisors were pleased with the large number of students who wanted to ‘get involved” with campus life. a gifl certificate. The team is eligible to compete for the company’s prestigious President's Quality Award that offers a trip to Disney Worid as part of the recognition. Class of 1965 Mrs. Nancy Wright Beasley recently relocated to Richmond, VA. and is working as a free lance writer. Recently she won a first place national award for writing a special ad\ ertising section for The Richmond Times- Dispatch. Class of 1968 Terrance S. Adams is employed with Hershey Choco late of Virginia, Inc., as a plant sanitarian and pest control operator. He is co-chairman of the Recycling Committee and is involved with the Employee Activity Committee. He enjoys golf, gardening, hunting and fishing. Class of 1973 Mrs. Deborah Gunter Bradley has returned to work full-time as a staff assistant for Mike McKeown at State Farm Insurance in Wake Forest. She and her husband, Steve, have two sons: Chris, age 14, and Jonathan, age 10. The couple has been married for almost 23 years, and Mrs. Bradley is Children’s Sunday School director, K/lst Grade Children’s Choir Director, and aduh choir member of Wake Forest Baptist Church. Mrs. Elise Chatfield has been appointed chairman of Volunteers of the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society at GBC GuUjjort. MS. She had previously held this position at Long Beach. CA. In addition, she also volunteers as a caseworker and budget counselor with over 3,000 volunteer hours. Class of 1978 Denise Williams Alston has earned a secondary teachers degree from North Carolina Wesleyan College along with her elementary education degree. Denise and her husband. Larry, also find time to transport their children to all their activities. The children are Mathew Stephen. 13; Brittany Katherine.8; and. Victoria Kaitlyn, 2. Class of 1980 The Roland Group Inc., a talent representation agency, owned by Chowan alumna Rochel Roland, was recently honored by the Advertising Club of Metropolitan Washington. At the club’s 1996 American Advertising Awards banquet, Ms. Roland’s agency was presented the Judges’ Special Recognition Award, an ADDY award for “Industry Self-Promotion Campaigns” and a Certifi cate of Excellence in “Interactive Marketing-Direct Sales” for its interactive self-promotion services, “The Roland Group - Digitized.” Rochel graduated summa cum laude from Chowan with an associate’s degree in photography. She was also a member of Phi Theta Kappa. NC. He and his wife, Sherrie, have a new daughter, Morgan Elizabeth Lawson, bom August 30, 1995. Class of 1989 Edna Ruffin recently completed her L.L.M., or masters of law, in taxation at the University of Denver and, after passing her bar exams, she is now a licensed member of the North Carolina Bar as a qualified tax attorney. She is planning to open a private practice as a tax attorney specializing in estate and business planning. Edna graduated summa cum laude from Chowan with an A. S. degree in business administration. While at Chowan she was a member of the national business honors society. Alpha Beta Gamma, Phi Theta Kappa and the Order of the Silver Feather. She was also recognized in Who's Who Among Students in American Junior Colleges. After graduating from Chowan and prior to attending Denver, Edna attended Campbell University and graduated with a BBA in trust and estate administration and was awarded a jurist doctorate in May of 1995. She is continuing her studies with only two courses to complete on a MBA in finance from Mercer University, Ms. Ruffin, originally from Bertie County, is the daughter of Thomas and Dorothy Ruffin of Ahoskie and a 1987 graduate of Ridgecrof^ School.
