A
Letter
from
the
President
As I write this, the 1996 fall semester is nearing comple
tion. Only four days of final exams remain before we
recess for the Christmas holidays.
This has been an exhilarating four and one-half months
for me and my wife. A great deal of curiosity has arisen
about how we like Chowan, Murfreesboro, and North
Carolina. People ask what we think about the place and
the people, and whether we feel at home yet. Our
answer to all of the questions is overwhelmingly positive.
On a daily basis, I am learning about the strengths and
incredible potential of Chowan and have discovered
much more here than I had dared to hope. The citizens
of the region are among the most gracious on the planet
and the Chowan faculty is enthusiastic, hardworking, and
deeply committed to the college.
As I expected, this has been a very busy time for
Johnnye and me. I have traveled extensively to meet
trustees and have visited with several of the generous and
dedicated supporters of Chowan College. The loyalty
that I discovered, among those who attended Chowan, is
surprising and gratifying It is certainly encouraging to
find such a reservoir of support, among graduates and
friends of this institution, that bodes well for the future.
After owning and managing a business for eight years,
Johnnye is making the transition to Chowan and Mur
freesboro with exuberance. She has remained active
managing the house and our schedules, traveling, and
hosting a variety of functions. In the months ahead, she
will be sorting through her experiences and looking for
ways to further utilize her unique strengths and skills.
Although the progression from junior to senior college
status is going well, some intimidating challenges remain
ahead of us. We must increase our endowment and
enrollment, build a new student center, improve our rate
of retention, continue to add new programs, and consoli
date the changes in the curriculum.
Your support for Chowan College has never been more
important than it is now. We need your encouragement,
your contributions, your ideas, and your prayers. We
ask that you help us increase Chowan’s visibility in the
places where you work, worship, and reside.
I would like to hear from you. I am interested in hearing
about your experience at Chowan and your vision for her
future. In addition to my mailing address at the college,
one of the following methods can be used to reach me
after college offices reopen January 6:
fax- 919/398-1396
e-mail - lotts@micah.chowan.edu
phone- 919/398-6221
May this Christmas season bring you peace, hope, and
love in abundance.
