Shurden to deliver inaugural address Inauguration celebration underway for President Stan Lott Dr. Stanley G. Lott will be installed as the twenty-first president of Chowan College at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, April 17, capping a week-long inauguration celebration. Lott, a former vice president for academic affairs at Louisiana College in Pineville, Louisiana, will be installed during ceremonies on the front lawn of Chowan’s McDowell Columns Building. He succeeds Herman E. Collier, Jr. who served as interim president for the 1995-96 academic year. L. Clement Yancy, chair of the Presidential Search Committee will introduce President Lott and Rev. W. Jerry Holcomb, chair of the board of trustees and pastor of King’s Grant Baptist Church in Virginia Beach, Va., will complete the installation. Dr. Walter B. Shurden, chair of the department of Christianity at Mercer University, Macon, Ga., will deliver the inaugural address. “President Lott sees his inauguration as a time of highlighting the long and rich history of Chowan College and anticipating an exciting future,” says Austine O. Evans, vice president for student en rollment and chair of the Inaugural Steering Committee. Events leading to the inauguration begin Satur day, April 12, when a “Cajun Country Evening,” paying tribute to Lott’s Louisiana heritage, is held on the campus green starting at 6:30 p.m. The social event includes an authentic Cajun dinner and On/ tA& Insic/e'. . A reception for the artist will immediately follow the concert in the President’s Dining Room, The Mary Frances' Hobson Lecture and Prize reception, dinner, conferment, and lecture are scheduled for Monday, April 14. The literar>' award will be presented to distinguished author Jill McCorkle. A writer’s reception and book signing will take place in Ward Parlor from 5:30-6:15 p.m., the dinner and conferment will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the President’s Dining Room, and the lecture will begin at 8:00 p.m. in Marks Hall Auditorium. Tuesday, April 15 events will include a President’s Prayer Breakfast at 8:30 a.m. in the President’s Dining Room and a Student Government Association reception for faculty and staff from 4:30 to 6:30 p m. at Hertford Academy. A panel discussion on “Ethics Across the Curriculum,” will begin at 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, in Marks Hall Auditorium. Panel members will include distinguished guests: Dr. David McKenzie, chair of the department of religion. Berry College, Rome, Ga.; Dr. Bill Rogers, professor of Christian education. Baptist Seminary, Richmond, Va.; Dr Paul Simmons, professor of ethics, University of Louisville and Louisville Presbyterian Seminary, Louisville, Ky.; and Dr. James Dunville, associate professor of business, Chowan College. The panel will be moderated by Dr. David Fillingim, assistant professor of religion at Chowan. An ice cream social will immediately follow on the Marks Hall Veranda. “This will be a stimulating discussion revolving around how the academic community can address the moral and ethical confusion that exists in our society,” announces Evans. Events scheduled for Wednesday include a Fellowship Reception from 5:00 to 7:15 p.m. in the President’s Dining Room and an Inaugural Worship Chowan College’s SGA president named as Tmman Scholar finalist Laura B. Allgood, president of the Student Government Association, was recently selected as a Truman Scholarship Finalist. Allgood is a senior and the daughter of WiUiam and Betty Allgood of Danville, Va. Competing with more than 1200 nominees from the nation’s top college students. Allgood spent nearly a year cultivating a solid application. She worked closely with Dr. Danny Moore, assistant professor of history, to outline her detailed graduate school plans for a Ph.D. in Twentieth Century Political History, explain how she views her career in public service and compose an extensive public policy position paper. “The application procedure required a great Laura B. Allgood deal of research and time commitment,” noted Allgood. “I am extremely thankful for all the help and support from Dr. Moore, the faculty and staff and my family,” she continued. “It has been invaluable in that it required careful thought about my graduate school and career plans.” The Harry S. Truman Scholar ship Foundation was established by Congress in 1975 to recognize the thirty-third President’s contributions to the nation, commitment to public service and interest in education. Eighty $30,000 scholarships are awarded annually to college students exhibiting outstanding leadership potential, planning a career in government or other public service, and attending graduate school Allgood will travel to Washington, D C April 11 for an in-depth interview. Stanley Chowan College’s Twenty-first President Service at Murfreesboro Baptist Church beginning at 7:30 p.m. The Thursday agenda includes an Inaugural Breakfast from 8:30 to 10:00 a.m. in the President’s Dining Room; the gowning of delegates at 10:30 a.m. in the lobby of Robert Marks Hall; the Installation Ceremony at 11:00 a.m. in front of McEX)well Columns; and an Inaugural Luncheon on the campus green immediately following the installation.
