community and plan the week-long celebration with
the greater community in mind,” says Evans.
All events are open to the public and most are
free. However, because many events require a

A Letter from the President
The twenty-first presidential inauguration of Chowan College is rapidly approaching and
I sincerely hope that you are making plans to attend. Some of you may be wondering why
the installation is taking place nine months after I became president. Actually, it is not very
unusual. Among my colleagues attending the Harvard Summer Seminar for New Presidents,
at least one will be inaugurated later, one will be inaugurated the same week, and a number
will be installed around the same time frame. A
“friend” of mine recently suggested, with tongue in
cheek, that the purpose for the delay was to see if I
was going to work out before planning such a
celebration.
I believe that many activities scheduled during the
inaugural week will reflect our heritage and our hope
for Chowan. Some events, such as the Ella Ann
Holding Community Concert and the Hobson Lecture,
were already scheduled and have simply been
incorporated into the week-long schedule. The prayer
breakfast with area ministers Tuesday morning and
the worship service for area churches Wednesday, are
intended to reflect our core identity as a church-
related institution. Our “Ethics Across the Curricu
lum” colloquium Tuesday will launch the recently
approved curricular reform.
I welcome and encourage you to attend as many activities as you can schedule. As we
rejoice together, I hope that you will keep in mind that the purpose of the inauguration is
not to focus on the individual, but rather to celebrate a significant event and milestone in
the life of Chowan College. Please make plans to join us. I look forward to seeing you on
the campus during inaugural week.
