wenty teams compete in annual Chowan Golf Classic Neither crisp temperatures nor cloudy skies dampened the spirits of eighty enthusiastic golfers in the 6th Chowan Classic Superball Golf Tournament. Twenty teams assembled June 6 at Beechwood Country Club for the annual event that raised $3,200 in scholarship funds for Chowan students. Facing a green and white sea of carts, Director of Alunmi Services and Tournament Director Charlie Aycock prepared two flights of teams by reviewing tournament rules just prior to the shotgun start. Prizes were awarded to the top three teams in each flight. Each member of the first place team received a trophy and a $100 Beechwood Pro Shop gift certificate. Second place team members received $50 gift certificates and third place winners received $25 gift certificates. hi Flight A, first place winners included Jerry Alexander, Tom Alexander, Chris Burton and Rick Tate, all of Ahoskie, with 15 under par. Second place awards went to Jim Garrison, Murfreesboro, Harvey Rheinhardt, Goldsboro, Dan Surface, Murfreesboro, and Harry Webster, Rocky Mount. Rounding out third place was the team of Charles Bentley, Murfreesboro, Pete Britton, Williamsburg, Va., Scott Colclough, Ahoskie, and Merle Yates, Ahoskie. Taking top honors in Flight B were Joe Almario, Tim Britton, Keith Rawls and Joe Spicer, all of Ahoskie, with 11 under, while Bemie Baker, Joe Murray. Murfreesboro, Glenn Overman, Ahoskie, and Cathy Wilson, Ahoskie, captured second place. Third place finishers included Jeff Emory, Aulander, Gene and Mary Etta Flowers, Murfreesboro, and Bart Ward, Winton. Winners of a Snake Eyes wedge in the Longest-Drive Contest were Jack Owens, Gatesville, and Cathy Wilson. Closest-to-the-pin contest winners Hal Liverman, Murfreesboro, and Cathy Wilson each took home a Snake Eyes putter. Door prizes, awarded during the luncheon, included Snake Eyes golf clubs, Chowan umbrellas, Chowan Classic polo shirts, Mary Kay products from Consultant Twyla Duke, golf towels and Titleist golf balls. Other gifts were donated by WestPoint Stevens, Roanoke Rapids, and Taylor’s Insurance Services, LTD, South Hill, Va. The annual drawing of names for the renowned putting contest took place following the tournament round. Lucky competitors included Raymond Benthall, Murfreesboro, Brad McCain, Raleigh, and John St. George, Ports mouth, Va. McCain took home the honors with a Snake Eyes putter and wedge, oceanfront accommodations for two at a Myrtle Beach resort, comple ments of Art Jones Travel of Franklin and a dozen Titleist golf balls. Aycock, offering his appreciation for this year’s corporate patrons, said “I want to formally thank Kerr Group, Inc., Sprint and 360 Communications for their sponsorship of the tournament again this year. Their generous support continues to help advance scholarship fiind goals at Chowan and encourage healthy competition between competitors.” T\no share “Male Athlete of the Year” honors By JACK GOLDBERG Two outstanding male athletes shared honors during the annual spring Awards Day ceremonies. The Chicago Bulls have their Jordan and so do the Chowan Braves. During the past year Herman Jordan rewrote the record books as he finished an outstanding four-year career in the famed “Blue and White.” He was named Most Valuable Player in two tournaments and also named to the AIl-Touma- ment Team in the Braves other tournament appearance. Individual records include 234 single season rebounds, 11 double-doubles in a season, 70.4 field goal percentage and 608 points in a single season. The outstanding statistics produced a new all-time record at Chowan College. He holds career marks in scoring, field goal percentage, rebounds, blocked shots, field goals, most games played and being named to nine different All- Toumament teams. He enters the record f'T books as one of the finest ever to grace the I center court of the Helms Center. The Chicago, II. native is a sports management major. Chris Whitesel put together eye-popping statistics en route to one of the fmest seasons ever by a member of the Braves baseball program. Individual records fell to the junior second baseman as he set a new standard for hits and doubles in a single season. Whitesel was also named Most Valuable Player of this year’s Chowan Invitational Tournament by virtue of his base-hitting prowess. A solid student, the psychology major is from Hudson, FI. Whitesel’s name will be added to the list of outstanding student-athletes who have been part of the Chris Whitesel Braves baseball program. Herman Jordan “I also want to thank the sponsor of this year’s hole-in-one opportunities. Unfortunately, the 1997 Buick Century, waiting to be claimed on hole 12, must go back to the Charles H. Jenkins and Company lot in Ahoskie,” Aycock quipped. Other hole sponsors included Centura Bank, Snake Eyes Golf Clubs, Ponte Vedra Beach, FI., Golden Peanut Company and R, L.
