According to Harris and Lawrence, there were several other male students preceding Dudley. We apologize for the error. Meg Jackson —Photo by Cftl Bryuit Ro»noke>ChowtQ Newt-Hertld Meg Jackson: complete student-athlete By JACK GOLDBERG The distinction of being “a winner in the classroom and on the termis court” has characterized the career of Meg Jackson. A native of Franklin, Va., Jackson transferred to Chowan after attending Longwood College for two years. She brought a tremendous work ethic with her along with a degree of self confidence that has made her a key player in the development of Chowan’s women’s tennis program. The experience factor allowed her to step on the court with confidence at the number one position she earned on the Lady Braves squad. Armed with a will to win, Jackson was a fierce competitor who earned the respect of her competition. Watching her play, anyone could see how she skillfully moved her opponent to set up a winning shot. Jackson beat her competition mentally rather than overpowering them physically. The calculated play enabled her to break down her opposition point by point and one game at a time. Over the last two years, Jackson compiled an excellent 21-3 record. She made her presence known early on Chowan’s court, finishing with a 7-1 record in her first season. Her senior year was opened in impressive fashion, finishing second overall in the consolation round of 32 players in the prestigious Rolex Tournament. Her style of play impressed the quality field of participants as she met and defeated several ranked players during the Toumament. Riding the momentum of her success through the spring season, she finished with an unblemished 9-0 record. The Lady Braves benefited from Jackson’s leadership, finishing with their best record (4-5) since the program was established four years ago. “Meg is a great athlete who brought skill and determination to the tennis court and our program,” Head Coach Pam Brown commented. “She met each opponent with the mental strength to skillfully outplay and defeat each opponent.” Near perfection also followed her into the classroom as her name appeared on the Dean’s List for four consecutive semesters. An excellent student, Jackson maintained a high GPA and plans to graduate in December with a bachelor of science degree in music education. She has been named to Who’s Who Among American Colleges and Universities and was recently presented with the Outstanding Student in Choras award during the spring Awards Day Convocation. 150 Anniversary edition of alumni directory underway Attention Chowan alumni!
