Recipients of Senior Scholastic Awards ChoW*" ■mi Angela Mae Lowery (top photo) and Evelyn Micttelle Copeland (lower photo) shared the Senior Scholastic Award for highest academic achievemerrt in the Class of 1997. A Letter from the President The level of activity on campus during the summer is astonishing. Amazingly, Chowan’s summer school and freshman orientation are only small parts of the entire schedule. Participants in The North Carolina Teachers Academy are assembling here for five weekly sessions. Each assembly involves approximately eighty teachers and administrators from across North Carolina for intensive training in technology and other topics to enhance their effectiveness. It is music to my ears to hear that two groups have already completed training and are singing the praises of Chowan. Next fall nearly 400 teachers, scattered throughout the state, will begin their school year better prepared and with highly- positive impressions of Chowan College. More than 1200 young people and their counselors will gather on campus to participate in the Passport Program during four incredibly busy weeks as three hundred youngsters a week arrive from North Carolina and surrounding states for church-related community service work. Camps for basketball, graphics, soccer and young artists will provide summer activities, Tech High and Junior Scholars will assemble for academically-oriented programs and 75 Upward Bound high school students have returned for another season. In the midst of all this activity, an unbelievable number of physical plant improvements will reach completion. New elevators, updated restrooms, new carpeting and paint will restore Parker Hall while Dunn, Simons and Mixon Halls will receive fresh paint and carpet. Jenkins and Belk Hall will also receive fresh paint. All residence halls are undergoing wiring additions for connection to the campus-wide computer network system that will allow students with personal computers to access both the campus network and world wide web directly from individual rooms. A computer lab will be installed in Marks Hall and the newly-remodeled Beacon buildings will be connected to the rest of the campus with an underground fiber optics extension. Both McDowell Columns and Whitaker Library will receive critically-needed roofs and the library will acquire a fire alarm system. Turner Auditorium will be updated with new lighting, sound and draperies and the Helms Center with new carpet. The Braves Den will receive painting and roof repairs. The campus-wide telephone system will be replaced with sophisticated equipment and the parking lots behind McSweeney and Library will be repaved. Additional safety lighting will be added around campus and the cafeteria will receive a new grill. Chowan is making great strides. However, significant challenges and opportunities lie ahead. We must continue to increase our etu-ollment. It is my hope that before the year 2000, we will have at least 1,000 students enrolled at Chowan. To accomplish that, we must continue to improve the quality of the total experience a student receives at Chowan. We cannot succeed without your support. I invite you to visit Chowan and see for yourself »tat is happening. Help us encourage students to select Chowan. Support the college with your financial resources. Pray for us to gather the strength, courage and wisdom to do what needs to be done. Dr Stanley G.
