From the President The excitement was high as Head Basketball Coach Bob Burke recorded his 400th win in collegiate athletics on the campus of Chowan College recently. Our athletic program continues to impress me. As I glance at the filled trophy cases in Chowan’s Helms Center, the importance of athletics in the historical life of Chowan is obvious. Our athletic teams have collected numerous awards and enjoyed a reputation as a fierce competitor. Participation in the athletics program at Chowan College has contributed to the success of many alumni. If I created a list, it would be extensive. Nate McMillan of the Seattle Supersonics, Curtis Whitley of the Oakland Raiders, George Koonce of the Green Bay Packers and Mark Royals of the New Orleans Saints would be included. Also, Mandy Crandle, teacher at Seaboard Coates Elementary School in Northampton County (N.C.), Rebecca Reason, church ministry in Kentucky, Matt White, director of physical fitness at the Downtown Athletic Club in Manhattan, Brian Hill, assistant basketball coach at Pope Paul Pius VI H.S., and on and on. Chowan’s athletic program continues to be an important part of student life. Approximately 35% of our students participate in one of the eleven intercollegiate programs. As a non-scholarship program, NCAA Division III places strong emphasis on the fiill development of the student. During Chowan’s recent Awards Convocation, three of the starters on oia Lady Braves Basketball team received President’s List awards. The accomplishment requires a grade point average of 3.85-4.0, with no grade below a C. In order to continue strengthening the athletics program at Chowan, we have com pleted several changes. First, Jim Garrison, the legendary football coach and former athletics director, has been named executive director of the Braves Club Foundation and Diane Morea, from Ball State, was selected as the new athletics director More recently, Dan Surface, former head football coach, was named assistant athletics director and director of marketing for athletics. Our plans to build a new football stadium have created a great deal of excitement. The primary motivation for this project has been the planning of a new student center to be located on the scenic, lakeside site currently occupied by the present stadium. In a move to upgrade our facilities significantly, a lighted stadium will be built in a natural bowl behind the Helms Center and will provide us with a stadium worthy to bear the name of Jim Garrison. I applaud our athletic programs — both past and present — and express deep appre ciation for the contribution they have made to the lives of hundreds of young people, to the college, and to this area of the state. I look forward, with great anticipation, to Chowan’s future championships as a four-year institution. Come, reconnect, and share in the excitement at Chowan! Stan Lott President, Chowan College Jessica Continued from page I “Eventually, I want to go to grad school for a master’s of fme arts. I want a bachelor’s in studio art with a concentration on sculpture,” Jessica said. “Then, I want to teach on the college level — and hit all the galleries I can.” It all began when she was three. “I still have a drawing she made then,” said her mom, a seam stress, who taught her the art of sewing, not realizing that it would literally be art, “Jessica has always been a deep thinker,” her mother said. “I don’t do anything for the fim of it. Every thing I do has a statement. I feel the purpose of my art is to communicate,” Jessica said. “Every piece I have, has a specific meaning. I use underly ing themes in all my work.” “I use a lot of religious imagery — not specifically any one religion. It’s important to accept all rehgions,” she said. “There is a purpose for pretty pictures, but my purpose is communica tion, to help people be unafraid of learning something new. “People today are not used to doing that.” FULL TUITION LEADERSHIP SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE Entering freshmen for the fall semester of 1998, from Nortfi Carolina or Virginia, wfio served a full temn as President of tfie Student Council (Body) at his/her high school and meet nomnal admission standards will receive scholarships and grants equal to full tultbn.
