black ties and sequins Amid palm trees, white linen and candlelight, former student athletes and sports enthusiasts gathered in dressy duds for the James G. Garrison Stadium Night on April 18. The high-spirited affair opened with a reception in the Helms Center lobby for more than 150 upbeat guests. Music, dinner and guest speakers high lighted the evening of festivities while alumni reminisced about former games, coaches and facilities. Braves Club President Harvey Reinhardt ‘61, of Goldsboro, N.C., introduced guest speaker Robert Brown ‘80, of Fairfax Station, Va., a former Green Bay Packer and Chowan College Hall of Fame member. Edwards, who is a deacon in his church and a member of the Puritans, parents two children with his wife, Karen. Ben Hemdon '67, Fredericksburg, VA, is the athletics director at Chancel lor H.S. He has been married for 28 years and has a daughter (16). Charles "Mort" Taylor '67, South Hill, VA, sells insurance and provides auctioneering services. He and his wife have three children. Taylor is involved in his church. Masons, Shrine Club and assists with athletic training at the local high school. Floyd "F.W.' Abemathy, Jr. '68, Sutherland, VA, sold his Meineke Muffler franchise and now assists with his wife's (Brenda) business, Windows 'N' Walls Interior Design. He has one grandson. Patrick Dudley Neal '68, Clinton, NC, serves as pastor of Elizabeth Missionary Baptist Church, Roseboro, NC. He serves as an Army Reserve Chaplain in the 81st Regional Support Group, Columbia, SC, and was just promoted to Lieutenant Colonel. Wesley Steven Hauser '69, East Bend, NC, is president and CEO of HKS Hardware and Holland Metal, Inc., Hauser is also the past president of NC D.H.I. and listed in Who's Who in American Business. He and his wife, Brenda, have two children. 1970s Ron Harrell '70, Greenville, NC, is a commercial real estate broker with Prudential Prime Properties in Greenvilla Betsey Barrett Kello '70, Courtland, VA, has held several positions with the Union Camp Corporation. She is currently the executive secretary to the vice president of operations and completing a degree in business management at Paul D. Camp Community College. She is the mother of two sons (23, 20). J. Donald Vaughan, Jr. '70, Keysvillei, VA, has been a leaf buyer for the Brown and Williamson Tobacco Corp., Export Leaf Division, in Wilson, NC for 28 years. Larry R. Hale '71, Virginia Beach, VA, writes that he recently enjoyed hunting with fellow classmate Richard Thomton '71, who gave him his first lessons in the sport. Hale is a CPA. Morris Newlin '71, Greensboro, NC, owns and operates New Garden Landscaping & Nursery in Greensboro. A past presi dent of the NC Landscape Association, Newlin won three national environmental land scape awards last year. New Garden was also voted Garden Center Innovator of the Year by the National Retail Garden Centers of America. Newlin coaches pony league baseball, serves as a church trustee and chairs the NCLCA Scholarship Golf Tournament. He and his wife, Judy, have three children. Ronald B. Robertson '71, Suffolk, VA, is a teacher and coach with the Suffolk Public Schools. Robertson and his wife, Deborah, have four chiklren. Mark W. Aiken '72, Brighton, CO, changed jobs recently but still works in the petroleum equipment industry covering the Rocky Mountain states for OPW - a Dover Corporation company. He writes, "GO BRAVES." R.K. 'Rocky' Dunbar, Jr. '72, Williston, SC, moved back to his hometown and joined S&K Construction Services, Inc. He and his wifa Shirley, have two children. Dunbar volunteers with the Williston Recreation Department. Herb HIrzel '72, Wilmington, DE, received his M.B.A. from Wilmington College. The owner/president of City Window Cleaning Inc. of Delaware holds contracts with such clients as the Smithsonian Institution and Arlington National Cemetery. He is a founding member and past president of the Interna tional Window Cleaning Association. Hirzel and his wife, Patricia, have four children. Hirzel also volunteers with the Brandywine Little Leagua publication in the journal Utilitas Mathematica. The textbook, Afplications of Abstract Algebra with Maple, coauthored by Neil Sigmon, Ernest Stitzinger and Richard Klima, has obtained initial acceptance for publication by CRC Press LLC, The text involves demonstrating applications of abstract algebra, an upper-level undergraduate mathematics course. music Dennis Mclntire led a confer ence on electronic music and music sofhvare for the Virginia Baptist Convention in April. Carole Nicholson recently judged two music festivals at East CaroUna University: North Carolina Federation of Music Clubs Festival and North Carolina Music Association Festival, where she judged high school pianists in the special awards division. Nicholson also served as a judge for the Raleigh Young Artist Auditions held at Meredith College. religion & philosophy Douglas Chismar represented the ethics perspective on a panel at Bowling Green State University- Firelands Campus, Huron, Ohio, devoted to the topic of Censorship and the Arts. Chismar also presented and led a session at a meeting of the Collie Art Association in Toronto, Ontario, entided, “The Global Metropolis: Re(De-)Signing the Non-Site.” The panel was devoted to the aesthetic and functional use of public spaces. Along with Barbara Bernstein, assistant professor of painting and drawing at UC- Fresno, Chismar delivered a paper at Harvard University’s phenom enology conference in April. His paper/slide presentation, entided “Mystery and Aesthetic Percep tion,” draws insights from the practices of Greek mystery religions and illustrates their relationship to recent abstract and conceptual art. David Fillingim recently had book reviews published in Journal of Country Music, Folklore Forum and Filson Club History Quarterly. science Upon a request from the South Carolina Water Resources Commis sion, Emily Deaver spoke to Lake Murray Association members in Columbia, S.C. about the long-term fate and bioavailability of copper (found in weed herbicides) in Lake Murray and any organism effects the mineral might produce. Phyllis Dewar’s abstract, “Integrating Optical Activity and Freezing Point to Determine Sucrose Concentrations in Juices of Canned Fruits,” was accepted for presenta tion during the 15 th Biennial Conference on Chemical Education, University of Waterloo, Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, August 9-13. Bonnie Revelle, Alpha Chi sponsor, presided at one of 15 sessions in which papers and creative projects were presented at the regional convention of the Alpha Chi National Honorary Society, held in Montgomery, Al. during April. She also presented a poster session titled, “A.D.A.M. Interactive Anatomy-Incorporation into the Curriculum” at the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society National Meeting in Fon Worth, Tx. during May. visual art Doug Eubank’s, “Green Flatiron Teapot” gained him entry into the FayeneviUe Museum of An’s Twenty-Sixth Annual Competition for North Carolina artists.
