Living Memorials Kept In 'Book Of Memory’ .. , _ V,,, 1= ii«ri An active Chowan College En- MURFREESBORO - People continually support Chowan Col lege’s "Book of Memory,” estab lished by Chowan’s Board of Trustees on February 19, 1962. This living memorial has helped many bereaved people perpetuate the memory of deceased friends and loved ones. When gifts are made for entry In the “Book of Memory,” the name of the person memorallz- ed Is entered on the pages of this book, with the date of death and the name of the donor, or names of donors, underneath. All funds received from this source go into the General En dowment of Chowan College. As contributions to the “Book of Memory” are received, Chowan College’s President Dr. Bruce E. Whitaker writes the family of each person whose memory is memoralized. Such contribu tions help comfort grlef-strick- en persons and, in so doing, contribute to the General En dowment of Chowan College. Another feature of the “Book of Memory” used by numerous families is annual contributions to keep alive the memory of a loved one. Families or friends give annual contributions, usual ly on the anniversary of the person’s death, honoring again the memory of the deceased and perennially renewing their ex pressed sentiments. The amount of the gift Is never revealed. These funds, placed in the Gen eral Endowment of Chowan Col lege, are not used. Only income produced by these funds is used in the operation and growth of Chowan College. Income pro duced through interest In en dowment funds is used in col lege operation. Improving fa cilities, increasing scholarships, bettering faculty salaries, ac quiring and maintaining better equipment and many other uses to improve the academic situa tion. An active Chowan College En dowment Committee recently stated thatChowanneeds$2,000,- 000 in endowment during the next decade. The “Book of Memory,” and other gifts through wills and trusts help toward reaching this goal and not only honor friends and loved ones, but help multi tudes of young people consistent ly knocking on the doors of Cho wan College for an education. BEAUTY WITH A BEAT— Gail Rowe, 18, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Rowe of 318 Mimosa Drive, New port News, talent winner ot Chowan College, entertains with "torch singing" of pro fessional stature. COMMANDER for Chowan College's precision drill team, the Bravettes, is Bon nie Harriet Zorn, a small- size young lady who gets a big lift from life. She also performs for the Chowan Players, and is probably the only octress ever to stand- in for a barbell. When An nie Get Your Gun" was pro duced by the Chowon Ploy- ers, no barbells were avail able for the circus strong man. So Bonnie, who al ready had 0 role as an In dian maiden, was hefted high above the audience each night. DR. BRUCE E.
