MURFREESBORO - People
continually support Chowan Col
lege’s "Book of Memory,” estab
lished by Chowan’s Board of
Trustees on February 19, 1962.
This living memorial has helped
many bereaved people perpetuate
the memory of deceased friends
and loved ones.
When gifts are made for entry
In the “Book of Memory,” the
name of the person memorallz-
ed Is entered on the pages of
this book, with the date of death
and the name of the donor, or
names of donors, underneath.
All funds received from this
source go into the General En
dowment of Chowan College. As
contributions to the “Book of
Memory” are received, Chowan
College’s President Dr. Bruce
E. Whitaker writes the family
of each person whose memory
is memoralized. Such contribu
tions help comfort grlef-strick-
en persons and, in so doing,
contribute to the General En
dowment of Chowan College.
Another feature of the “Book
of Memory” used by numerous
families is annual contributions
to keep alive the memory of a
loved one. Families or friends
give annual contributions, usual
ly on the anniversary of the
person’s death, honoring again
the memory of the deceased and
perennially renewing their ex
pressed sentiments. The amount
of the gift Is never revealed.
These funds, placed in the Gen
eral Endowment of Chowan Col
lege, are not used. Only income
produced by these funds is used
in the operation and growth of
Chowan College. Income pro
duced through interest In en
dowment funds is used in col
lege operation. Improving fa
cilities, increasing scholarships,
bettering faculty salaries, ac
quiring and maintaining better
equipment and many other uses
to improve the academic situa
tion.
An active Chowan College En
dowment Committee recently
stated thatChowanneeds$2,000,-
000 in endowment during the next
decade. The “Book of Memory,”
and other gifts through wills and
trusts help toward reaching this
goal and not only honor friends
and loved ones, but help multi
tudes of young people consistent
ly knocking on the doors of Cho
wan College for an education.

COMMANDER for Chowan

size young lady who gets a
big lift from life. She also
performs for the Chowan
Players, and is probably the
only octress ever to stand-

able for the circus strong
