SSToS. iL CAMPUS. p». .=> MURFREESBORO - Chowan College has opened Its 118th year and many people ‘turned the mldnl^t oil,” so to speak, to prepare Its campus tor ap proximately 1,200 students. A great many changes and altera tions have been made on several of Chowan’s buildings this sum mer, and much of this work was done by Jack Hassell, superin tendent of buildings and grounds, and his staff. The historic Columns Build ing, erected In 1851, has been the setting for extensive reno vation, especially on the top floors where dormitory space has been upgraded significantly for some members of the incom ing student body. Numerous members of the Chowan faculty completed ad ditional graduate study during the summer months, prepar^ themselves to better serve Cho wan’s students. Among those who ‘kept up” with their academic fields by securing additional graduate credit hours and by working toward hi^er degrees are Professor Calvin Dickinson, who studied at the UMverslty rf North Carolina at Chapel HiU; Professor James G. Garrison, University of North Carolto at Chapel Hill; Professor John P. Harris, University of North Ca rolina at Chapel Hill; Professor Jerry Lee Hawkins, East Caro lina College; Professor Chiles A. Helms, university of Mis souri; Professor William P. Mc- Craw, University of North Caro lina kt Chapel Hill; Profes^r E C Powell, Emory University; Miss Hattie E. Russell, Univer sity of Tennessee; Professor Warren Sexton, University of North Carolina at Chaijel HIU; Professor Webster Z. Smitn, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; Professor L. M.
