Dr. McDowell, a former South
Carolina farm boy, worked his
way through college at Wake
Forest. Dr. Whitaker, a former
Cleveland County farm boy,
worked his way throu^ college
at Wake Forest.
Dr. Whitaker has been presi
dent longer than anybody taking
office during the 20th century.
Dr. McDowell served for 20
years, during two separate terms
as president, and held this office
longer than anyone else in his

Adams of Conover, teaches in
both the Department of Religion
and the Department of English.
Dr. and Mrs. McDowell want

ical research and Biblical study
in Palestine, using this experi
ence to interest students In mean
ingful Bible studies. Dr. Whit
aker served as a Baptist pastor,
college and unlversityprcrfessor,
as well as being state secretary
for the Student Department ot
the Baptist State Caiventlon of
North Carolina, before becom
ing Chowan’s president.
Dr. McDowell, who served as
president from 1848 to 1849 and
again from 1862 to 1881, led
Chowan throu^ turbulent Civil
War years when many other col
leges were forced to close. Dr.
Whitaker has been Chowan’s
president since 1957 and Is lead
ing Chowan throu^unprecedent-
