Bowen, president of the Baptist State Convention of North Carolina who has served as postor of the state's lorgest church — the First Baptist Church of Greensboro — for 20 years, is seen addressing the class of 1968 during grodiration exercises which brought to a close the college's 120th year. 4 From Chowan Named Outstanding Men In Nation PORTRAIT OF A PIONEER — A pair of presidents surrounds the portrait of pio neer Chowan College trustee Rev. Robert Hisop Savage during a recent visit to the campus by Dr. James Ralph Scales of Wake Forest University. He is in the of fice of Dr. Bruce E. Whitaker, left, where this portrait hangs. More than a century of service to Chowan College is repre sented in this portrait, a recent contribu tion to the college by Mrs. W. Eldridge Smith of Franklin, granddaughter of the pioneer trustee. Famed artist tiavid Sil- vette of Richmond, whose paintings appear in many museums and who has estab lished a reputation for being among the outstanding painters of portraits of his toric persons, painted the portrait for Mrs. Smith. The pioneer trustee was pastor of churches in North Carolina and Virginia, served os a Chowan College trustee for 14 year* and was chairman of the Board of Trustees for 10 yeors. Because he wos widely known os a staunch champion ^f the cause of church->felated college educa tion, the Rev. Savage was elected chair man when he first joined the Board of Trustees in 1879. MURFREESBORO - A very unusual college executive and three professors at Chowan Col lege are among selections for the 1968 edition of “Outstanding Young Men of America,” chosen by a 14-man national board of editors. One of the professors is Dr. B. Frank Lowe Jr., Army Re serve chaplain and popular preacher acting as dean and sum mer school director who teaches in the college’s religion depart ment. He and his wife are active in many civic endeavors, includ ing teaching literacy classes and missionary programs designed to aid needy people in northeastern North Carolina and Virginia. Another is Jerry Lee Hawkins, baseball and football coach who is also a professor ofpsychology and winner of a Natioilai Science Foundation grant to pursue fur ther graduate studies in psychol ogy. Also selected was Dr. James M. Chamblee, chairman of the college’s music department, who has organized and directs several oratorio societies and orches tras composed of outstanding musicians from throughout northeastern North Carolina and southeastern Virginia. The administrator is Harvey W. Harris, director of college relations whose services include responsiblUtles as minister, reporter and editor. A former newspaper editor. Baptist pastor and chaplain to delinquent chil dren in Louisville, Ky., he is also a veteran Golden Gloves fighter whose experience in cludes 145 bouts and 27 tourna ment championships.
