Scholars Overcame Obstacles APEX - Deaf mute Virgil E. Jockish Jr. of Apex and busy pastor’s wife Margaret Shores Farley of Covesville, Va., over came obstacles to become Cho wan College’s top scholars. Graduating from the famed Chowan College School of Graphic Arts, Jockish helped pay his edu cational expenses operating hea vy equipment, painting houses and printing. He was previously an honor student and winner of the vocational medal at the North Carolina School for the Deaf, where he also studied printing. Recording the college’s top grades for 1967-68, as she had since becoming a Chowan student, Mrs. Farley commuted from Franklin, Va., where her husband was pastor of Franklin Presby terian Church. The talented dramatist and orator, winner of numerous awards and honors, graduated with the class of 1968. She and her husband, the Rev. Ben W. Farley, are now serving sev eral Presbyterian churches in the Covesville, Va,, area and she is pursuing further studies at the University of Virginia. Mrs. Frances T. Parker of Ahoskie, graduate of the col lege’s unique 33-month program of education for nursing, and Mrs. Betty Spring of Murfrees boro were among housewives named to the college’s presi dent’s list for recording Cho wan’s most outstanding grades. Mrs. Parker won numerous awards for excellence in accom plishments as a nursing student. Another nursing graduate, Rena Diane Taylor of Smithfield, Va., was also named to the president's -list. There were 24 other students named to the dean’s list for recording outstanding grades and 68 honor roll students during the college’s spring semester. VIEWING EQUIPMENT — People from t-hroughout the world visit the famed Chowan College School of Graphic Arts to view the most modern printing equip ment, much of it computerized, that makes up its tools for preparing young people for challenging and exciting ca reers in one of America's best-paid indus tries. Seen guiding visitors on a tour of facilities is Eddie Keeter of Roanoke Rapids. SCHOLAR AT WORK — Overcoming obstacles that would defeat lesser men is an everyday occurence for deaf mute Virgil E. Jockish Jr. of Apex, a recent grodu- ote of the Chowan College School of Graphic Arts. He recorded higher scholastic grades than any other male student at Chowan College during the 1967-68 school year and was among the college's top scholars each se mester since entering tho college os a freshman.
