HISTORIC CAMPUS SITE — A majestic setting for college life is exciting careers in tomorrow's world by the McDowell Columns, given to young people preparing themselves for challenging and historic center of campus activity since 1851. Giant Higher Education Strides reveal, more than 90 per cent are serving In positions of leader ship In church and community MURFREESBORO - Enter prising, modern and progressive Chowan College is making giant steps forward with proven pro grams of Christian higher edu cation which have stood the test of time, as it opens its 121st year. Completion of the Whitaker Library this summer, recently named to honor the administra tion of Dr. Bruce E. Whitaker as president of Chowan College since 1957, brought the college’s total assets to more than $6,000,000. The new library-fine arts structure, the tenth new and modern building to be added to the campus scene during the past decade, includes an Antiquities Room to house articles of his torical Interest to Chowan Col lege and this entire region of northeastern North Carolina and southeastern Virginia. Also in cluded is space to shelve 100,000 volumes and seat more than 400 students and faculty in several reading areas, as well as space and equipment for music, drama and the fine arts. The new fine arts facilities are being named to honor the late Mrs, Jeannette Snead Daniel, who served as a music professor at Chowan and previously had the college’s Department of Music named the Daniel school of Music in her honor. The most modern equipment for expansion of the college’s educational programs in music, drama and other fine arts is being housed in this ultra modern structure. The structure housing the Cho wan College School of Graphic Arts has been named McSweeney Hall, honoring 16 years of ser vice by John M. McSweeney as director of this nationally famed school which prepares young people for challenging careers in newspaper mechanical produc tion, printing, editing and pub lishing. Dedication services for Whit aker Hall and Daniel Hall will soon be held. Many services are contributed to the Roanoke-Chowan area by Chowan College’s administra tors, professors and students. In addition to faculty and staff speaking engagements, last year student groups of speakers, sing ers and entertainers made 76 appearances before various audi ences in northeastern North Carolina and southeastern Vir ginia. Along with campus facili ties and scholastic excellence, faculty membership at Chowan is continually growing. All mem bers of the faculty and adminis tration are active church mem bers, more than 75 per cent are members of civic and service clubs and, continuing surveys endeavors. Chowan’s administrators and professors continually upgrade their education and preparation to provide the best possible Christian higher education for their students. President Whit aker recently returned from a study tour of European colleges and universities, many behind the Iron Curtain, sponsored by the Comparative Education So ciety. With Chowan College providing Christian higher education for more people than ever before in the college’s 120-year history, plans are continually being im plemented to give young people the individual attention needed to better prepare for a place in tomorrow’s world. Items included in the college’s development program attainment projection are: Chowan College is continually preparing to take further steps which will guarantee better qual ity education to its students and is dependent upon corporate sup port, individual gifts, support from loyal alumni, the Baptist State Convention of North Caro lina, the North Carolina Founda tion of Church-Related Collets and major foundations supporting endeavors for education, Founda- tions want their grants to add strength to institutions where strength already exists and these sources of support are dependent upon local support. Chowan Col lege’s strength as an institution of Christian higher education and as a major industry for this re gion, in a real and significant sense, depends upon the people of the Roanoke-Chowan area.
