Irwin Belk Is Leader For Board Of Advisors Board Of Advisors, Chowan College, 1968 CHARLOTTE - An outstanding leader In North Carolina’s edu cational, political and religious life for many years, Irwin Belk of Charlotte, is serving as chair man of Chowan College’s Board of Advisors. Currently serving In top lead ership positions with eight church and religious organiza tions, he is known as one of North Carolina’s outstanding cham pions of the cause of church- related college education. His leadership has been credited with aiding the growth and progress of many church-related colleges and educational institutions, and he Is known as a dynamic speak er for Christian causes, being among America’s outstanding churchmen. He has represented Mecklen burg County, both as state rep resentative and senator, and served state government as a member of nine legislative com mittees during his most recent term in the Senate. Among lead ership posts in the state govern ment he has held the chairmanT ship of the Highway Safety Com-. mittee and vice-chairmanship of the Appropriations Committee. He is also an outstanding busi nessman, serving as president of Belk Enterprises, Inc., and chairman of the board of the Belk Foundation. He is a veteran of combat duty during World War II. He and his wife, the former Carol Grotnes, have four children: William Irwin, Irene Grotnes, Marilyn and Carl Grotnes Belk. The Board of Advisors, com posed of outstanding leaders from throu^out North Carolina and Virginia, devises and rec ommends ways to help Chowan accomplish its long-term objec tives as a church-related col lege of the liberal arts by mak ing recommendations for better ment of the college.
