Unusual Student-Professor
Duet Entertained The Area
POTECASI - An unusual stu-
dent-professor duet of entertain
ers from Chowan College has
been much in demand throughout
the area since they organized
their acts last year.
Professor Robert G. Mulder,
a Potecasi native who also serves
as minister of music at Colerain
and was named among "Out
standing Young Men of Ameri
ca” for 1967, recites comic poet
ry. These include some of his
original compositions, including
such topics of natural concern
for a professor as “A Teacher’s
Lament” and “A Commercial
for Teachers.”
He also plays ragtime piano
solos and performs confused folk
songs on the guitar.
Impersonations of famous ac
tors and performers are provided
by upcoming sophomore Don
Hines of Petersburg, whose band
made two records when he was
an entertainer in Germany.
Hines has served as master of
ceremonies for a number of pro
grams at the college. Including
Chowan’s talent and variety show
during the spring semester.
SINGING CHOWANIAN — Guitarist and folk-singer
Emma Brooks, an upcoming sophomore from Fayetteville,
has thrilled her classmates and many others with the
beauty and purity of her performances of ethnic folk
songs, as well os some of the modern folk music. She has
represented Chowan College as a musical performer
throughout northeastern North Carolina and southeastern
Virginia, as well as presenting numerous campus concerts
and appearing in benefits. She also performed in folk
clubs and coffee houses throughout the southeastern
United States before becoming a Chowan student. Emma
is largely responsible for the success of "the Saint James
Cellar," a coffee house constructed and operated by mem
bers of Fayetteville's Snyder Memorial Baptist Church.
MAKING MUSIC — Overseeing perfor
mances by his students. Professor Robert
W. Brown serves as band director tor the
college.
Largest Recent Audiences
Heard Spring Choir Tour
MURFREESBORO - The larg
est, most widespread audiences
of recent years heard Chowan
College’s Touring Choir during
the 1968 version of Its annual
spring tour, which took the mu
sical organization of 32 talented
students throughout much of east
ern North Carolina and into Vir
ginia.
These annual choral tours car
ry the music ministry of Chowan
College far beyond boundaries
of the Roanoke-Chowan area. The
Girls Ensemble provides music
and inspiration for Baptist asso-
ciationsJ meetings and other sig
nificant occasions. Instrumental
music provided by Chowan’s band
sets the scene for pageants, pa
rades and athletic events. Con
certs are held throughout the
school year, especially at Christ
mas and Easter.
These are merely a few of the
ways that musical organizations
composed of students at Chowan
have come a long way during re
cent years in establishing them
selves as permanent instruments
for cultural service in the area.
Supervising this varied pro
gram of music and culture is Pro
fessor James M. Chamblee,
chairman of the college’s De
partment of Music. Accompanist
for most performances is Pro
fessor Trelles G. Case, talented
pianist and organist. Professor
Robert W. Brown is director for
the college’s band and teaches
varied courses in music.
The Girls Ensemble is directed
by Mrs. Mary Rose Lawrence,
who also serves as a professor
In Chowan’s Department of Mu
sic.
