The football team, led by ath letic director and head football coach, Jim Garrison, and assis tants Jerry Hawkins and Dan Surface, plays an attractive nine- game schedule. Four of the con tests will be at home, including games with nationally-ranked powers, Baltimore in the open er, September 19, and Ferrum, October 10. For the first year, Chowan will be competing in the new Coastal Conference in this sport, while other competition is under the banner oftheCavalier- Tarheel Conference, Other teams In the Coastal league are Balti more, Ferrum, Potomac State, Lees-McRae, Hartford and Wes ley. In addition to the returning let- termen, an excellent crop of freshmen, who reported for prac tice August 17, is expected to pick up the slack, Chowan is ex pected to have one of its fastest backfields, with Earl Gibson, who sprints the 100 In 9.9, being joined by several fleet freshmen. This is Garrison’s 13th year as head coach and Hawkins is in his 13th year. Surface replaces Sam Green, now coaching at Carson- Newman. As for the basketball team, the Braves, coached by Bill Mc- Craw, are expected to be on the rebound after a disastrous sea son last year that produced few victories. They have a number of stellar lettermen returning Including Clifton Faison, center from Murfreesboro; Ken Byrd, forward from Richmond; and Karl Yankey, guard from Hummels- town. Pa. All started a majority of the games and their play was marked by steady improvement. They will be joined by several outstanding freshmen candidates and the return of Harry Flipping and Jack Ross who missed com petition last year. Flipping was one of the stars on the 1968-69 team who posted a 16-9 record equal to Chowan’s finest and nar rowly missed capturing the con ference tournament crown. That season he averaged 14 points and 19 rebounds a game. In addition to basketball, Cho wan competes in tennis (coached by McCraw), baseball (Hawkins), golf (Garrison) and track (Sur face). Other members of the con ference are Southwood, Ferrum, Loulsburg, Mt. Olive and College of the Albemarle. All are classi fied as two-year colleges, Cho wan is alone in having a paved track. In baseball and tennis, Chowan placed second last year. The baseball team fought its way into the finals of the district, only to be edged by Spartanburg, Advanc ing to the regionals, they finished in fourth place. The Braves, as they tradition ally do, won the conference crown in golf but were upset in the district, finishing second to Spartanburg, After finishing in the top 10 the past three years in the national tournament, Cho wan slipped to 14th in competi tion in June in Miami, Fla, Even then, they finished ahead of 18 other teams in the tournament, open only to the leading teams from across the nation. In track, Gibson shone for the Braves, In several dual meets, he was a triple winner and emerged as the 220 champion in the district meet. He was second by a matter of inches in both the 100 and long jump. He holds school records in the latter two events. A BRAVES BACK picks up yardage against Davidson freshmen.
