Taiwan Missionary Pays Summer Visit To GA Camp On Campus MURFREESBORO - Partici pation In a summer camp on the campus of Chowan College gives Missionary Jack Gentry an op portunity to talk about Taiwan, his mission field, show arti facts and possibly change the direction of a young person’s life. Gentry was at Chowan this summer with his family for the North Roanoke Association GA Camp attended by some 168 girls and their counselors. The Gen trys are on furlough after spend ing five years in Taiwan, also known as Formosa. The opportunity to talk and meet informally with the camp ers reminded Gentry of his own decision to become a missionary. It was made while he was a teen ager, some 20 years before he became a missionary. An early decision was also the case for wife Ruby, a native of Enfield. She was 13 when she volunteered. “We believe our being here,” Gentry said, “can have meaning for the camjjers." His emphasis during his fur ious, however, will be on con tinuing his studies for the master in theology degree at southeast ern Baptist Theological Semi nary where both he and Ruby received their bachelor of di vinity degrees in 1962. Baptist work in Taiwan, which means “beautifully green,” is only 10 years old. There are over 100 churches and chapels with national pastors for each. “We’re there to help the pastor fulfill his calling,” Gentry said. No longer Is the missionary a pastor and chief evangelist he explained. “He is a helper behind the scenes. I like this approach. It fits my nature,” he said. A convert must often pay a high cost to become a Christian, Gentry explained, since the con version of a young man or wom an is often accompanied by earth- shaking effects on the family, particularly the parents. According to Gentry, the peo ple of Taiwan live in close, family units. The children and especially the sons are to pro vide for the parents in old age and the after life. They believe that after death in the new world people still need food, it is the duty of the children to offer sacrifices so that the parents can have food; otherwise, the parents are destined to a ghostly Returning to Taiwan in May 1971 with the Gentrys will be their two children, Jan, 7, who was bom in Asheboro, and jay, 3, whose birthplace Is Taltei, Taiwan’s capital city. Shrewsberry Named Professor Of Math, Chowan MURFREESBORO - An in structor at Tidewater Communi ty College of Portsmouth, Wesley L. Shrewsbury, has been named professor of mathematics at Chowan College. A native of Basin, W. Va,, Shrewsbury is a graduate of Concord College in Athens, W. Va., and the University of G^r- gia where he received his M. Ed. He also served four years as teacher and chairman of the department of mathematics at Osbourn High School of Manas sas, Va.
