Photography Courses New SOME DAY she may be printing your newspaper, thanks to Chowan’s School of Graphic Arts. Belle Futrell is one of a number of coeds enrolled in the School. Chowan College’s well-known School of Graphic Arts will introduce courses in photography, beginning with the opening of the 1972-73 academic session. The announcement was made by Dr. B. Franklin Lowe Jr., dean of the college, and Herman W. Gatewood, director of graphic arts. According to Gatewood, the courses will cover the technical aspects of photography, including the operation of all types of cameras from the popular 35mm class to 4x5 press cameras and portrait models. Instruction will also be given in darkroom techniques as to the processing of film and the printing and enlarging of photographs. College officials have worked closely with Eastman Kodak Company of Rochester, New York, in establishing guidelines for the instructional program, who assisted in writing the course outlines and laying out laboratory facilities. Furthermore, the instruction is designed to allow the student to transfer to senior institutions to complete work in obtaining the baccalaureate degree in commercial photography. A large portion of the instruction will be devoted to color photography and will acquaint the student with the techniques of processing of slides and transparencies. Lighting, color correction, types of films, etc., will also be an integral part of the courses. Using the facilities of the School of Graphic Arts, the students in photography will be introduced to processes necessary for the reproduction of color photographs. The printing school has complete facilities for four-color separations by both the direct and indirect methods. A modern electronic color scanner will be covered as to operation procedures and correction methods. Dean Lowe stated that the new program is a natural expansion and out-growth of the existing programs in graphic arts and commercial art of the college in an attempt to meet a genuine need for such courses on the part of students and industry.
