Banner Year Predicted For Fine Arts
A “banner year” is the
prediction for the fine arts
department by chairman, James
Chamblee.
With the addition of a division
of dance this year, the fine arts
department is divided into four
divisions: music, art, drama and
dance. Each offers a program
appeahng to and involving both
Chowan students and the public.
During 1971-72. the School of
Music presented nine concerts
featuring Chowan students and
faculty members. In addition, the
School of Music sponsored five
concerts by guest artists. This
total does not include the four
concerts sponsored by the
Chowan Community Concert
Series. Full-time music
professors include Bob Brown,
Jefferson Ishee, Trelles Case and
Chamblee, who also heads this
division.
The 1972-73 year will likely
surpass this record, Chamblee
remarked.
In art, the enrollment more
than doubled last year, its
second. A total of 10 exhibits were
displayed in the Art Gallery,
located in Daniel Hall. “The
student exhibit last spring
displayed some remarkable
talent on the part of the art
students at Chowan,”
commented Chamblee. He said
that an outstanding schedule of
exhibits will be offered this
academic year.
A new feature of the art
program is a two-year program
in Commercial Art. This
program will be offered for the
first time in the fall. “The course
will provide the student the skills
and background to go directly
into the professional field of
commercial art or to transfer to a
four-year institution for further
studies,” Chamblee elaborated.
This division is headed by Craig
Greene assisted by Doug
Eubank.
Provision is also made within
the fine arts department tor
students with an interest in
drama, said Chamblee. The two-
year curriculum is in its second
year and Chamblee predicts an
expansion on all fronts including
student productions and tours to
area schools. “At least two or
three major productions are
planned for the coming year,”
noted Chamblee, “and one will be
a musical which will employ the
efforts of the whole department.”
The director of the drama
program is Steve Brannon.
The fine arts department will
introduce a new division in the
fall — dance. “Chowan will be
among only a very few junior
colleges in the nation to offer a
dance major program,” reported
Chamblee. The director is Mrs.
Helen Bridgers. She will be
assisted by the director. Gene
Hammett, and staff of the
Academy of the Norfolk Ballet.
“The Norfolk Civic Ballet will
from time-to-time be in residence
at the college and present
programs,” remarked
Chamblee. He said this was the
case during the summer when the
first annual Dance Workshop was
held at Chowan with over 60
young people attending.
THE CHOWAN division ot drama
under the direction of Professor
Steve Brannon presents dramas
in both the fall and spring. Gina
Buchanan and David Talton
starred in Tennessee Williams’
“Summer and Smoke" presented
last year.
