f Suspense Adds To Festival An element of suspense was added to this year’s Spring Festival, held on Saturday, April 26. For the first time, the Queen of Spring, Miss Faith Oakley was named only moments before she received her crown from President Bruce E. Whitaker. The twelve candidates, six sophomores competing for queen, and six for freshman princess, presented the final competition, talent during the afternoon of the Spring Festival. The judging for beauty, poise, and personality was completed at a banquet on April 10. Campus support was determined by a vote of the student body. Normally the Queen is picked during the Queen of Spring Pageant held in Feburary, This year, with McDow^^ll Columns auditiorium undergoing renovation, the event was not held. This fact produced a major change in the Spring Festival. In the past, the talent has been presented by various campus groups in honor of the queen and her court. This time the candidates entertained the crowd of parents, alumini, students, faculty and staff, and the public as they competed for two crowns. The Campus Carnival, which has become a tradition in connection with Spring Festival, provided an hour’s interlude before the coronation when the winning candidates were announced. All events were held on the front lawn. Serving as judges were Mrs. Robert C. Jenkins, Ahoskie; Mrs. C. A. Brummell, Winton; Mrs. Guy Revelle, Jr., Murfreesboro; William H. Burgwyn, Woodland; and Dell Hocutt Ahoskie. The freshmen selected to compete for Princess were Donna Newsome, Crafton, Va., Miss East Hall; Denise Bowers of Chesapeake, Va., Miss West Hall; Betty Jo Taylor, Newsoms, Va., Miss Parker Hall; Charlotte Woodard, Murfreesboro, Miss Day Student; Lisa Markey, Raleigh, Miss Belk Hall; and Kelly Bates, Woodbridge, Va., Miss Jenkins Hall. The sophomore candidates for Queen were Sherrye Sheffield of Portsmouth, Va. Miss West Hall; Donna Elks, Lasker, Miss Day Student; Debbie Miltz, Virginia Beach, Va., Miss East Hall; Susan Bell, Camden, N. J., Miss Jenkins Hall; Faith Oakley, Durham, Miss Belk Hall; and Jana Holcomb, Roper, Miss Parker Hall. Spring Festival activities for the alumni centered on reunions for the classes of 1905, 1910, 1915, 1920, 1925, 1930, 1935, 1940, 1950, 1955, 1960, 1965, and 1970. Alumni serving as hosts and hostesses were; 1910, Miss Grace Parker, 1925, Mrs. Glenn Smith Benthall; 1930, Mrs. Frances Flythe Bryant; 1935, Dr. Inez Willoughby, Elrod; 1950, Mrs. Kathryn Brant White; 1960, Mrs. Elaine Early Myers and Randy Britton; 1%5, Mrs, Joy Durham Dilday; 1970, Ken Wright.
