Two Goals Reached In Past Year Dr. Bruce E. Whitaker, in liis 19th year as Chowan's president, announced the college reached two important financial goals during the 1974-75 year. Chowan College President Bruce E. Whitaker has announced that Chowan reached two financial goals during the recently completed 1974-75 year. He said Chowan operated in the black for the 17th consecutive year. The Baptist, two-year college also surpassed its Annual Giving Program goal of $50,000. Income from student fees, gifts, and endowment was about $2,000 over the $2.6 million budget, according to President Whitaker. Chowan has operated in the black since 1957-58, Dr. Whitaker's second year as Chowan’s president. He begin his 19th year as president in May. Dr. Whitaker said the success of the Annual Giving Program was an important reason income exceeded expenses. He said contributions to the program for daily operating expenses totaled $50,697.82. They came from members of the Board of Trustees and Board of Advisors, faculty and staff, alumni, parents and other individuals, businesses and industries, churches, civic clubs and other organizations. “In announcing the program in September, 1974, we remarked that the goal is challenging but within reach. We said we were depending on the many friends and supporters of Chowan to reach the goal. We appreciate their generous response and genuine interest in Chowan and the cause of Christian higher education,” Dr. Whitaker remarked. Chowan’s president thanked the chairman of the Annual Giving Program, Bob Hill, Sr. of Murfreesboro, and the other volunteer leaders for their efforts in raising the money and promoting the college. “Chowan could never have reached its goal without their dedication and work. It was a united effort under the able overall leadership of Mr. Hill. The success of the program in its first year will serve as a foundation for future growth, helping Chowan continue to enjoy financial stability,” Dr. Whitaker said. One of the major reasons behind Chowan’s sound financial condition has been the support through the years of North Carolina Baptists, through churches, the Baptist State Convention, and individuals, Dr. Whitaker noted. He said gifts from the Baptist State Convention amounted to $120,000 for operating purposes. Individual Baptist churches contributed over $15,000, he stated. The chairman of Chowan’s Board of Trustees, J. E. Ferebee of Camden, called operating in the black “a financial achievement which is even more impressive in light of the current economic situation.” He continued, “This didn’t happen by chance. It’s the result of an all-out effort by the entire campus to operate as economically as possible while still maintaining a quality educational program. Through sound management and good business acumen the college has been able to meet its financial obligations, serve its students well, and continue to operate as a financially healthy institution,” he remarked. Ferebee praised Whitaker, business manager Ben Sutton, and the Chowan administration anf faculty for their “conscious and untiring efforts to use each dollar as wisely and efficiently as possible.” Ferebee added, “Throughout the years Chowan’s continuing concern is to keep the cost of tuition and fees to the student at the minimum level by making every effort to gain the maximum educationf.l mileage out of every dollar.” G’ville Senior Best In Show A Gates County High School senior.
