2 1986 Chowan Opener 139th year begins Wednesday Chowan College will open its 139th year Aug. 27 when students attend classes for the first time following three days of orientation, meetings with faculty advisers and registration. Freshmen and transfer students will arrive Sunday, Aug. 24. They will be welcomed by President Bruce E. Whitaker in McDowell Columns Turner Auditorium in the evening. Meetings with faculty advisers will follow. Returning students will meet with their advisers Monday as freshmen continue their orientation. Registration is scheduled for Tuesday in Marks Hall. The college's faculty and staff, including a new departmental chairman among seven new professors, are preparing for the fall opening with a three-day workshop Aug. 21-23. Dr. T. Robert Mullinax, executive secretary, Council on Christian Higher Education, Baptist State Convention of North Carolina, Raleigh, was the featured speaker for the President's Annual Banquet in Thomas Cafeteria. The new faculty members include Miss Joyce Elaine Adams in the Department of Business; Mark Steven Genshaw, graphic communications; Dr. Michael Dwaine Greene, Department of Religion and Philosophy; Mrs. Rebecca L. McLawhom, mathematics; and Mrs. Valerie H. Sutton, who will teach English. Greene will serve as departmental chairman, replacing Rowland Pruette who has retired. Spring honored by rites Betty Ann Drake of Franklin, Va. and D id Clark of Fayetteville was named Chowan College's queen and king of spring for 1986. They received their crowns during the college's Spring Festival coronation. Freshmen Bill Spence and Julie Weis were named prince and princess. Chowan President and Mrs. Bruce Whitaker presented the honors. Competition included Spring Pageant fashion show and student body vote. Participating in the annual ceremony were master of ceremonies Waverly Pinckney of Mt. Pleasant, S.C.; and flower and crown bearers Emily Carter, Jamie Lee Lane and Lindsay Sutton. Spring Festival activities include alumni class reunions, student art and photography exhibits. Campus Carnival, and a concert by the choir. Main St. E^ON Murfreesboro The new staff members are Tommy Appenzeller, assistant to the director of athletics; and residence directors, Rene Osborne in Parker Hall and Scott King, Simons and Mixon Halls. During the fall semester, a number of special events will be held. Parent's Day is Sept. 27 and Founders Day will be observed Oct. 10. Homecoming is set for Oct. 18 and Campus Evangelism Week is scheduled for Nov. 3-7. The mid-term break is Oct. 24-28 and Thanksgiving holidays are Nov. 25-30. Final exams will be given Dec. 12-18 followed by Christmas holidays. The spring semester will open Jan. 14.
