They were welcomed by new President Jerry F. Jackson in McDowell Columns Turner Auditorium in the evening. Meeting with faculty advisors followed. Returning students will meet with their advisers Monday as freshmen continue their orientation. Students will also participate in social orientation and recreational opportunities provided by the Student Development Department. The faculty and staff prepared for the fall opening with a workshop in Marks Hall auditorium Aug. 18. Dr. Jackson and Dean of the College B. Franklin Lowe Jr. lead the workshop on the theme, 'The Future of the College." A number of special events will be held during the fall semester. Convocation is Aug. 28; Dr. Jackson will speak on "New Beginnings." Parent's Day Oct. 7 and Founder's Day is Oct. 11. Homecoming and Hall of Fame Day will be held Oct. 28. Campus Evangelism Week is Nov. 1-3. The mid-term break is Oct. 20-24 and Thanksgiving holidays are Nov. 21-26. Final exams will be given Dec. 8-14 followed by Christmas holidays. The spring semester will open Jan. 10. Five faculty, administration and staff members who have served Chowan for 25 years will be inducted into the Order of Lux et Veritas during the fall semester. They include Dr. Lowe; Professors Janet H. Collins, health and physical education, and J.P. Harris, science; Mrs. Peggy Hare, secretary to the business manager; and Mrs. Margie Stephenson, housekeeping. They will join 25 other members of the Order of Lux et Veritas ("light and truth"), .including the 18 charter members who received the honor in 1987. Twelve area students listed in IVho's Who Among Students' Twelve area students are among the 32 Chowan students listed in the 1989 edition of WHO'S WHO AMONG STUDENTS IN AMERICAN JUNIOR COLLEGES as national outstanding campus leaders. Roanoke-Chowan area students who received the honor include six from Murfreesboro: William C. Bridgers, David William Edwards, John Marshall Hazelton, Donna Jo Phillips, John Marshall Hazelton, and John Edward Wooten. Also named were William Calvin Burns of Como, Johnathan Roy Hoggard of Lewiston, Lisa Hope Mizelle of Harrellsville, Edna Annie Ruffin of Ahoskie, Carol Renee Stansbury of Roanoke Rapids, and Robert Wilson Stewart of Woodland.
