The dormitory, which was named in honor of members of the Belk family who own the Belk Department Store chain in North Carolina, was con structed in 1964 and was in need of renovation. The Belk Foundation of Charlotte contributed partial funding for the renovation. "We at Belk feel honored to participate in the renovation of Belk Hall on the campus of Chowan College. Chowan occupies a position of very high importance with Belk. We believe the college does an excellent job as an institution of higher education in the state, and reaches students not only within the state of North Carolina, but in many other states as well," states Paul Peel, executive vice president for Belk in Rocky Mount. "Mr. Doug White, a former manager of the Belk store in Rocky Mount, was recently appointed an Honorary Lifetime Trustee of Chowan College for his years of service on Chowan's Board of Trustees, so the ties between Chowan and Belk are very strong," says Peel. Major renovations for the dormitory included (tainting rooms, installing new carpet, wiring rooms for individual telephone service, and wiring rooms so at a future date computer service can be tied into the academic mainframe. The dormitory rooms also got new mattresses, chairs, sinks, and refinished furniture. VEMnS Eason and George Hazelton, and they remember James very well. He was chosen for the Order of the Silver Feather while at Chowan. He also received the General Electric Scholarship for minority students majoring in business and transferring to a four-year school. After leaving Chowan, James attended the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, where he graduated in 1989. "In the course James took with me, we used R: Base as the relational database management tool," states Andrea Eason.
