6 1990 Chowan Opener Byrd joins staff as Associate Dean of Student Development MURFREESBORO - Mary Jo Byrd joined the staff at Chowan College as Associate Dean of Student Development effective August 1. Dean Byrd comes to Chowan from the administrative staff of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She is from Lillington, N.C. and holds the B.S. degree in psychology (summa cum laude), minor in French, from Gardner- Webb College. She holds the master's degree in student personnel services from the University of South Carolina. She previously served as director of housing at Mars Hill College, assistant to the director of admissions at Campbell College, and dean of admissions at Tift College in Georgia. As associate of student development, Byrd will serve as director of all female residence halls and their staffs. She will be involved in both male and female student activities on campus and in intfamural sports. She will also serve as resident director for Jenkins Hall and be involved in producing the yearbook, Chowanoka. "Much of my professional experience has been at small colleges, so 1 am looking forward to working at Chowan," stales Dean Byrd. "1 believe we have the opportunity at a small school to provide personal contact and quality education. The staff and faculty at a small college are able to go the 'extra mile' and care about students as persons, understanding what they are going through as students." Mary Jo Byrd "1 personally view myself as a mentor to the students," states Dean Byrd. "I am here to be of service to students and their needs. I hope students will see me as a source of information and as a means to express their concerns. We in student development are here to assist students in all aspects of student life outside the classroom." Brame is new director of campus ministeries MURFREESBORO - Kelly Brame joined the staff in the office of student development at Chowan College as Brame ^ * director of campus ministries effective August 1. Brame is from Durham and received the B.A. degree in biology with a minor in psychology from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. He was awarded the Master's Divinity from Southeastern Seminary, and previously served as a campus ministry intern at East Carolina University in Greenville. In his position as director of campus ministries at Chowan, Brame will serve as director of the Baptist Student Union, and coordinate the activities of all the religious clubs on campus (Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Voices of Inspiration and other clubs). He will also serve as advisor of the international students on campus and as coordinator of the intramural sports program. The director of campus ministries is also available to provide personal and pastoral counseling to students. "I enjoy campus ministry and plan to serve as a student advocate. If a student has a problem, I am available in the office of student development to listen and help all I can," states Brame. "1 hope students will stop by to meet me.
