1991 Chowan Opener 11 Chowan continues tradition as strong liberal arts college Founded in 1848, Chowan College continues to earn the respect and repu tation academically as an outstanding liberal arts college in the south. Students from 18 states and eight foreign countries come to Chowan, the second oldest of North Carolina’s seven Baptist colleges. The college offers 39 majors designed to give the two-year student an excellent foundation in language and literature, math and science, social sciences, religion and philosophy, fine arts, including music, drama and art, physical education and liberal studies, such as pre-law and pre-education. The four-year transition has opened a new department of education at the college with education (pre-school - middle) one of the four-year degrees to be offered. An outstanding business department offers courses in business adminis tration, merchandise management, com puter business systems, and many other technologies. The Krueger School of Graphic Communications trains stu dents in printing technology and photography, and is recognized as one of the best priming schools in the country. Business and printing technology will be offered as four-year degrees. New programs started within the past year are the innovative academic support program which assists students in achieving academically, socially and developmentally. The new Freshman Experience program beginning this fall is a semester-long course designed to orient freshmen to college life and build the skills they will need for success. Because Chowan is a relatively small college with a faculty/student ratio of 16-1, students receive individual at tention and the academic counseling they need to succeed at college. About 90 percent of Chowan's graduates transfer to senior colleges and univer sities after completion of the liberal arts programs. Other students who have completed career education programs in commercial art, secretarial scicnce, photography, printing technology, word processing, merchandising management and com puter science, begin employment after graduation. While the campus landmark is the 1851 McDowell Columns adminis tration building, most of the facilities are of modern origin. The newest buildings arc the S2.75 million Helms Physical Education Center and the Homer Graphic Communications Cen ter. Chowan's students also enjoy the spacious campus green, alumni gaz.ebo, and two scenic lakes. "When I get a letter," says one professor, "then I realize 1 did something profound for that student, and I was able to do it because of the environment here." That "can-do" environment is what makes Chowan stand out among private liberal arts colleges. As the college makes the U'ansition to four-year, it is expected that many more students will find they can come to Chowan to excel and achieve their academic goals.
