Mary Cams Harden, originally from Chicago, Illinois, was married to Professor Emeritus Harden for forty years. A graduate of The Parker School Joyners (From Page 5) Tammy were asked if they felt any added pressure to perform and to the added edge it gives them because they have people close to them who know what they are going through. Their family is a great network of support, they both agree. "We go to each other for support and advice," says Tammy. "I'm glad we are going to school together. Susan advices and encourages me. We study together sometimes and since we have the same major, elementary education, it helps to know that we are going into it together." Both of the sisters are excited about Chowan’s going four-year and the new department of education at the college. "1 feel like we're pioneers," says Susan. "We are going to be among the first teachers to come out of Chowan. 1 feel we are getting a top-notch education." Tammy summed it up, "At Chowan, the relationships with your professors are close, like family." And family is im[>ortant to the Joyners. in Chicago, she attended Bennington College in Vermont. The mother of three children, she enjoyed ballet, music, and art, but most of all, loved gardening. The seeds of inspiration she sowed while she was alive continue to thrive in her memory in Harden Chapel. Professor Emeritus Harden joined the faculty of Chowan in 1969 and both he and his wife, Mary (who died in 1985) have contributed much to the life and work of Chowan College. Mr. Harden completed undergraduate studies at Williams College and received the T.M.A. degree from North Carolina State University after he retired from a long and distinguished Army career. The professor emeritus contmues to teach part-time in the mathemaucs department at Chowan. Harden Chapel was designed by David Parker, chairman of the division of art at Chowan, with artistic contributions from professors of art, Susan Fecho and Stan Mitchell, to provide a quiet place for contemplation on a busy and active campus. The stained glass at the rear of the chapel was designed and made by Doug Eubank, professor of art at Chowan. Harden Chapel is open 24 hours a day and is ecumenical in orientation. The campus minister is responsible for programs held in the chapel.
